I'm heading down I-85 back home and I get nabbed by a College Park cop (which is right by Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport). I'm in a group of cars in my white, Mom's mobile-looking Maxima and I'm the one he pings with a laser. My bone of contention is that A. I wasn't going that fast B. How did he get a good shot on me through the gun surrounded by light traffic, including a van in front of me? I'm going to contest because I'm not paying the hefty fine. Any suggestions on how to beat a laser ticket?

Call John Ashcroft and tell give him the cops' name and badge number. Tell him you saw white powder residue on his fingertips while he was writing you the ticket.

Can't you just take defensive driving?

It's an idea. But College Park is a good little drive away from my house.

Well, at least here in Texas, you can take it anywhere in Texas, then just send the stuff into the court by mail.

I should know, I've only taken it around eight times since 1998!! :D

I've just never felt comfortable contesting a ticket that way. With defensive driving, you can get out of it for around $150 total, depending on court costs, it stays off your record, and you get a discount in auto insurance.

Sounds like you drive like I do. I'll have to look into that. Can you believe my score is up to:
    Porsche- no tickets
    IH truck- 1 ticket
    Maxima- 1 ticket
    wife's Volvo- no tickets.

    "Stop breakin' the law, *******!!!!"

Sorry, couldn't resist the Jim Carrey, Liar Liar quote. :D

I'm doing defensive driving right now from a speeding ticket. The worst part is, it was in a speed trap near my house that I KNOW is always there. Like a dufus, I just wasn't paying attention and got busted. :(

Yeah, I've slowed down lately, rarely set the cruise control more than 9mph over the speed limit.

    Looking back...

1 ticket a month after I received my license (speeding).
1 ticket a year and one week after my first (speeding).
1 ticket 5 years later, a couple of hours after I made fun of a co-worker who got 2 in one week (speeding).
1 ticket less than a week later (rolling through stop sign). Karma's a b****. :)
1 ticket about 6 months later (speeding).
1 ticket about 8 months later (speeding).
1 ticket about 3 years later (speeding).
2 tickets in one stop about 18 months later (rolling through two stop signs).

Not a single one is on my driving record! :D In fact, out of the 14 tickets I've received (I got two my senior year for MIP and not transferring my license from when I got one in California...both dropped), the only three that haven't been cleared where from my arrest last April. I didn't even want to fight them because I was clearly in the wrong.

Is is that overpass on Shepherd near I-10 (near the Kroger)? That's where they got me too.

I took defensive driving online. Simple. You can stop any time you want and when you log back in, you're right where you left off.

Do insurance companies still give discounts even if you're taking it to get rid of a ticket?

I got 3 speeding tickets within the first 3 months of having a driver's license when I was 16. My Dad and I had to "stand before the man" and plead our (my) case why my drivers license shouldn't be taken away from me.

Guess it didn't work, then. :D

(I've never gotten a ticket, which is not right. I've deserved lots of them. But I hardly ever get pulled over, and when I do I look so upset that they let me off with a warning.)

Hey, only one wreck in that time, which wasn't even close to my fault! There have been many close calls, and I attribute my avoiding them to the 48 hours of defensive driving I've had to take! :D

Hey Jeff is it really a speed trap, are they not illegal in Texas? I know in Arkansas they are. There is a stretch of highway from my hometown, Jonesboro, AR, that leads to I55 called I555. About half way through this stretch there is about a 100 yard stretch where the speed limit drops from 65 MPH to 55 MPH and if you blink you'll miss the sign saying 55 MPH. Well cops used to be all around this area just waiting to nab people on their way to or from Memphis or St. Louis or wherever and get them all the time but the courts here ruled that it was illegal. Is it not the same down there?
