School is like havinga job. I think it sucks also !!

btw, a feel good story. I had a paper due 10/31, and I waited till 10/30 to do it. This wasn't planned, but it happens. Anyway, at about 11:00 p.m., I decided to quit and not turn in a paper. I just could not do it. I took one of those "IQ" tests in a book and scored really high. So, I decided I did have what it takes. I finished the paper around 3, and basically made up my sources (i hope the ta isn't a rocket fan).
I expected a horrible grade for a paper that I thought was incoherent. Well, I just got it back and got a 95 !!!! That's out of a 100 btw. Moral of the story is : "Don't quit !!"

    Mulder,

So, you're saying that you'd rather be doing the same work, but not get paid for doing it?

Hmmmmm, no thanks. I'll never look back and say "I wish I was back in school".

It may have something to do with the fact that I started college about a DECADE ago, and that I absolutely hate U of H with a passion.

Rocket03, how's this one : General Patton, "Tanks for the memories." lol. Or Cat Cato : "Don't give Stevie the damn ball !! I want to pad my stats." No, the books were real, I just didn't use them.

btw, hope I wasn't tooting my horn. That paper was God awful and painful to reread. It was embarassing. I've written what I thought were great papers, only to get B's and C's on them.

I had your dilemma a few weeks ago. But then, my friend said to me "You will never regret getting a degree."

Don't quit, get a degree for a better future, if not purely for self-fulfillment. Also, try to get into UT, you'll love it. [IMG]

    What's so bad about U of H?

    • The water breaks down multiple times a semester
    • Many of the Profs don't give a rats ass
    • The food services are limited and getting smaller
    • A Prof of my weight training class told me to do something which permanently injured my back (twisted three vertebrae out of place)
    • I've been straight up lied to by professors on many occassions
    • Many of the employees (mainly in Roy Cullen) are rude
    • I was disputing a grade I got on a test with a dean of the department. I told him I was an "A" student, and that I had a 3.65 GPA since I've been back in school (there's much more to the story), but he goes, "How do I know all those classes weren't P.E. or basket weaving?" F-ing b*stard!
    • I could go on, but now I'm getting pissed off

I've had a couple grade problems at UT, but they were taken care of. Why do you think the prof's are lying ? Why would they do that ?

    • My freshman year: I didn't know jack. Didn't get to go to orientation, because I was working in the Gulf on a research ship up until school started. No one in my immediate family had gone to college so no help there. Here's the 1st lie. My Chemistry Prof. says in class, "If you do not come to class, I will drop you. Attendance is mandatory." Fair enough, right? So, I start to suck and stop going, expecting to be dropped. I ended up not getting dropped and I get an F on my report card. Sure my naiveté had something to do with it, but he lied none-the-less.
    • Same thing happened the next semester in my Biology class. This was even moreso my fault, but again still a lie. (I wasn't "in a very good place" at that point in my life.
    • I was taking the second freshman history with my wife (girlfriend at the time). On every single test I beat her on the multiple choice section by one or two. And, on the essay sections I always had more written (with more correct information). But, the entire semester she had one T.A. grade her tests, and I had another. We went to the professor after our last test, but before the final exam. He said, "If you don't end up with an A, let me know and I'll change it." After the final, I ended up with an A - and she ended up with an A. I went to his office, but he wasn't there. So, I left a detailed note about the situation. The grade was never changed. This particular lie ended my first stint with U of H. It also started my 5 year absence from college. I was just too sick and tired of U of H (along with other crap)
    • My Operation Management professor Khumawala (Don't ever take him, he's the worst professor I've EVER had) said in class one day, "Do not look at (a specific part of the class), it will not be on the next exam." So, I did as he said in class, and ignored the section that had anything to do with that. Well, come to find out it IS on the test. That wouldn't have been so bad, except that it made up approximately 60% of the test. I got a 68 or something like that on the test. I went to him in his office and explained the situation. He said, that what was on the test was not what he was talking about in class. But, the truth was that you had to know what he was talking about in class to be able to do the problems on the test. Getting no where with his lying ass, I went to the dean and the aforementioned (previous post above) meeting is what ensued. What pissed me off so much about that one, is that the material was very very simplistic and easy. It took me all of 5 minutes to look at it and I could've gotten them all right on the test.
    • I had another professor say that a particular problem wouldn't be on the next exam and it was, but luckily it was only one problem, and I got partial credit, so that experience wasn't so bad. But, again another LIE!

There may be more instances, but I can't remember them right now.

Also, I realize that not all of these situations were 100% the "other guy's" fault. But, you can only make decisions based on the information you have. And, if someone feeds you improper information, how can you make the proper decision?

wow. The first couple of things was prolly youthful irresponibility. I'm glad I don't have those problems. It's hard enough to make good grades alone, much less how hard it is to do it with people working against you.

I personally haven't had many great TA's. Some of them don't speak English well, some flat out don't give a crap.

I'm not saying that there isn't some truth to that statement, but it does not change the fact that I was still lied to.

    Dreamer,

If you are continuously "lied" to, why do you continue to trust your professors? When I attended the UH (which in my opinion, is a very fine school BTW), I made many "A"s by following the simple formula of reading the assigned texts, attending all lectures, taking good notes, etc. Being in the honors program afforded me the luxury of the school's very best professors - from what I gather of your academic standing, perhaps you can apply to the honors program. Though I will readily admit that there are some poor teachers at UH (they exist at every school), it's your responsibility to recognize their shortcomings and compensate through increased effort. Consider it a training ground for the real world - which, I also gather, you are well aware of.

BTW - the rude employees are in the Ezekiel Cullen building (English professors are in the Roy Cullen building, and I have always found them to be very polite!).

    cuttino,

Why did you put "lie" in quotation marks? They told me one thing a did another. That is a lie, unless you're Bill Clinton.

Who else can I "trust". It's their class and I can only sit there and listen to their lectures. If they do something other than what they say, how can I possibly be prepared for that?

I never miss class, always take notes, and read everything assigned. That's why my GPA has been over 3.60 since coming back to school.

U of H has definitely improved since I first started attending (way back in 1988). They didn't even have computer labs back then, and all the registration was a friggin' nightmare.

Nope, my overall GPA is 2.89 right now due to the three Fs I have on my transcript. They sorta suck.

You're right about the building name (I should know it by now). But, I did have one English prof screw me too. I got another A-, when it should've been an A.

Cuttino -- I agree with you about UH. I actually enjoyed my time there and felt I learned a great deal.

I think part of your experience does depend on your choice of major. As a journalism major, I was lucky because UH is pretty well-respected in that field. They have decent professors and good classes. Plus I was able to gain a lot of experience by working on the campus newspaper.

Now, as for the Honors Program, I have to disagree on that count. Granted, this was 12 years ago, but I went straight from high school into the UH Honors Program. I was immediately turned off by what I perceived as a good deal of snobbery on the part of the instructors and students. Also, it all seemed too insular. None of the honors students wanted to mix with the rest of the university students. Everyone wanted to stay holed up in the honors lounge playing chess.

As I said, I was young and this was a while ago. But it seemed to me to be a bit of a waste to come to a large university in a diverse urban setting and spend all your time hanging out with a tiny group of people in the campus equivalent of your grandmother's rec room.
