While I agree with dobro and others saying that the Rockets simply don't have the salaries necessary to (realistically) make a trade for Deron Williams before the season begins . . . it would be theoretically possible to make a trade for Williams prior to the start of the regular season (maybe even a little before the time that the Rockets acquired Harden in 2012). It would involve getting Papanikolaou signed in the next week or so and then postponing the Terry trade for a little while. Once the 30-day trade restriction period expires on Papanikolaou (which would be in mid- to late October), the Rockets could THEORETICALLY make the following trade for Williams:

    Houston receives: Deron Williams
Sacramento receives: Alonzo Gee, Scotty Hopson, Josh Powell and Robert Covington
Brooklyn receives: Jason Terry, Kostas Papanikolaou, Terrence Jones, Clint Capela and Isaiah Canaan

Again, I think that kind of trade is highly, highly unlikely.

I'm just saying that it's POSSIBLE.

Basically a 0.2% of it happening again. I would rather follow the Spurs philosophy.

Thanks for letting us know what you hear. In sales they say never call a potential client without a reason to call. The customer is less likely to take your call if you make it obvious you are just checking up on them to try and sell them something.

Checking on DWill & rehashing old conversation with Billy King is a good way to setup a phone call regardless. We all know its going to garnish interest in chatting from Brooklyn's angle.

Maybe talks start there and then potentially go to deals like Terry & a pick for KG. Who knows, but I wouldn't be shocked if Morey is starting to make calls around the league regardless just needs to find reasons to call them.

DWill has negative trade value, given his health and contract, and the luxury tax hit he is causing Brooklyn. What does Brooklyn have to give us in addition to DWill as a sweetner? Not draft picks, that is for certain.

Eh, Id consider taking Williams, but I wouldn't give up all those assets, without more coming back.

Getting Rondo for an expiring year, is far safer than a long term deal for Rubio.

Good luck convincing Dwight, James and whoever to take a major paycut so we can load up on role players. The Spurs model is virtually impossible to replicate.

Can the Rockets use the TE as part of a 3-way deal? For example, say the Rockets trade the TE to the Celtics for Bogans, Johnson, and Babb, giving them a 2nd rounder for their troubles, then use those 3 contracts as a way to match DWill's salary?

If DWill's knees check out, I'm not totally against getting him. But NO WAY I'm giving up anything beyond cap fillers for that contract. If it ends up being a bunch of non-guaranteed contracts plus maybe Papa, I can almost stomach it.

    Look at DW's contract:

    $19,754,465 $21,042,800 $22,331,135 for the next 3 seasons.

    1. Flexibility be damned.
    2. Not even sure we can group enough salaries to make the trade work.

Right.....unlikely, but the only way to happen (December). And only if we could fold Teletovic / Plumlee into the TPE.

No. A trade exception cannot be TRADED. It is merely a depository for incoming salary in order to complete a non-simultaneous prior trade (in this case, the trade of Jeremy Lin to the Lakers). It's a hole, not a hill.

Also, since the Rockets are operating over the cap (and must do so in order to utilize the trade exception in the first place), if an outside salary was acquired with the trade exception, the Rockets would not be able to aggregate that salary with others for two months.

Seems to me like Morey is probably just keeping tabs on Deron Williams to see if he's healthy enough to be considered a candidate. Morey can then tell Minny/Boston/Phoenix that we're also considering a deal with Brooklyn, thus helping him drive the price down for the PG that we ultimately get. I can't see DW being a serious target with that contract.

Terrible news. Nets would jump at a chance to ditch D.Will and his baby ankles. Can't imagine paying him what he's making for the remainder of his contract...

Yes, possible. But with the smallest 'p' in 'p'ossible, so I have to believe this is a non-starter unless the TE is utilized and 60 days later a trade were effected for D-Will.

On a different CBA question: if a player is stretched then signs with a new team does the new salary in any form affect the stretched salary?

    Thanks, BT, for your knowledge...x...

Thing is with trading for Williams is that he should be dirt cheap, so we could use our assets to nab an upgrade at PF like Milsap or Faried. Then we can sign O'Neal or Blatche with BAE.

    PG: Williams, Beverley, Smith
    SG: Harden, Daniels, Garcia
    SF: Ariza, Papanikolaou
    PF: Milsap, Adrian, Dorsey
    C: Howard, Blatche

I'd do it, do it Morey.

    Exactly.

That contract....the MAJOR health issues...way too much downside risk...and at this point, if everything DID go right...Does Deron even have enough left in the tank to help make us a contender?

I'd rather give Chandler Parsons 46m than Deron 63m.
