Have any of you guys converted a car from a gas engine to an electric engine? I was thinking about buying an early 70s 914 and switching it out. It'd be great for my wife's little commute up to work, and in my middle ages I could always pop off the targa top, go bald and get fat. Any pointers though? I've seen little things here and there out there but nothing definitive (a-z). ------------------
I know nothing of how to make them, but my 8 year old niece-in-law loves her electric car! Don't think your wife wants to ride around in the Barbie Mobile though. ------------------ snap crackle pop
I used to own a 1974 914 -- gas engine though. I just miss my car and have been afforded a perfect opportunity to reminisce. It handled so damn well. Eventually, we sold it to a guy who ran over a cinderblock and destroyed the car. ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
You might go to a dealership that sells electric cars, and get info on thier cars. They will probably have a lot of info on how electric cars work. I saw a Discovery Channel (or Learning Channel?) thing recently on electric and gas/electric hybrids. The technology is getting better, but they still seem to be very hard to get right -- since the balance between power, endurance, and praticality is hard to reach. They did point quite a bit to making the cars as light as possible -- since less weight meant better speed and endurance, and fewer batteries needed, which in turn cut down on the weight, etc... The electric cars are purpose built, and use a lot of plastic & composites. I had the impression that most conventional car frames/bodies are too heavy. Let us know what you find out! ------------------ Stay Cool...
Juan, Sorry to bring up a bad memory. If it helps, I drove up to Big Sky, MT this weekend and it dumped 25" at my hometown resort (it didn't snow at all at Big Sky). That's a good idea dc. I'm getting ready to bolt down to Barnes & Nobles (Utah joke) to see what they have also. ------------------
I thought they backed away from the idea of an electric car and started progressing toward liquid hydrogen automobiles. Good luck trying to develop that on your own.
