I'm looking to get a new computer before I head off to College. Naturally, my aprents don't want to spend too much money, definately under $2000. I was wondering if any posters have seen extremely good deals that I might be interested in? I'm more of a gaming type of user, so of course I'd like a good processor and all that. I check Gateway everyday and found this computer for around 1600 thats a P$ 1.8 512 ram - good sound and everything, 15" flat screen (yes, good deals on computers or flat screens, I'm going with the new technology! :) ) - if I purchased that computer I'd probably buy one of those new Ti 500 video cards with the money i saved myself to stick in there.. sounds like a nice system.. if anyone knows any better deals, I'd appreciate some input. Thanks,

    -LTF

    To give you some advice:

If you are going away to college (i.e. out of state and without a car), look into laptop's. I know they dont have the same bang for the buck (especially in gaming), but there's nothing worse than having to lug around a big ole desktop system through 4 years of college and storage, etc. Some people like to bring a crapload of stuff to college. I tried that and it sucked...it jsut meant I had more stuff to worry about when I left every year.

Also, I've found Circuit City has some alright deals. Oh, and check adds in the Sunday paper.

You can build a computer for a MUCH better value -- it's really easy, and fun.

as for the laptops, that's what my parents want me to get, but honestly I can't stand them. My dad uses one and I really hate using it, it's just too slow for me.. like the mouse on it and everything. I understand you can plug in a regular mouse but they keyboard and.. I guess I'm just not a laptop guy :)

That have several configuration options; that's an Athlon Ultra XP 2. They're out of 256 MB sticks of DDR RAM today, so you actually couldn't get that system today....or at least until they restock that RAM.

You have to realize that about $600 or 30% of that price is wrapped up in the sound card and speakers. And I can personally attest; they're worth every single penny. You're PC might very will probably be your finest stereo/home entertainment system.

Everyone will want to watch movies at your place.

If you're a gamer, I agree with Pole about the Pro Media's I have them and the Audigy Platinum and love them. Everyone who has heard them agrees they are just about the best sounding PC speakers available. Worth every penny. With that budget, I would build it myself and get the new P4 Northwood if you're going the p4 route. Also, If its possible, I would get RDRAM in a p4 system. Its just faster than DDR and the Intel 850 chipset is extremely stable. The GeForce 3 Ti500 is also a great choice for games. Alienware is real cool but real expensive. Just my 2cents.
