my desktop computer won't turn on. any ideas to what it could be? the motherboard has an LED light on it, and it's on so i don't think it's the power supply. could it be the processor?
You need to be more specific. What's is your spec at the moment? Is this a new or old built? What do you mean it doesn't turn on? When you press the power button your computer won't start?
no beeps, not a sound. when i hit the power button, nothing happens. it's an older build, probably 4 years old. asus a8v, 2 gb ram. i don't recall which processor i have on here at the moment, and can't find out without pulling the heatsink.
motherboard led could be powered by the cmos battery. try removing/disconnecting usb ports and starting it. sometimes a faulty usb-out will prevent boot up, since usb can act as a power provider, and is a potential for electrical damage.
Could be a short circuit. Try removing cables of PSU from the motherboard and other hard wares and plug it back in exactly as before. If it still not boot up. Try taking the motherboard out of the case and place it on a solid surface and reassembled the wires and cables and power it up again. Make sure to have the power unplugged when doing all this and make sure you know how to reassembled the wires connecting from your case to your motherboard. Another thing you could try before disassembled it is to unplugged the power and and remove the battery for 20 secs and replaced the battery. Since I don't know your motherboard there might be another step in clearing the Bios or CMOS with the pin.
A computer will still power up without the ram so ram isn't the problem. It's either the power supply or a short circuit on the board.
What he said. My desktop is doing the same exact thing, except i know its not the power supply as i swapped it out. Its been giving me constant problems, so I have just gave up on it.
There's two things that could possibly cause this: (1) Bad power supply. Put your face next to it and smell it. Does it smell like burning? That's a definite indicator. Otherwise, try it in another computer. (2) Motherboard short. Not much you can do about this if the power switch on the motherboard isn't signaling. The light on the motherboard comes from the CMOS battery.
thanks for all of the tips and suggestions. it turns out it was indeed the power supply that had gone bad. evidently, the 500w power supply i had put out different volts which would explain the light on the mobo stayed on but nothing else powered up. i put an old 250w power supply in and plugged just the mobo and fans in, and it powered up. so i picked up a new 500w power supply, reassembled the machine, and it started right up like it should.
