I'm having trouble with my cable modem, the computer light is flashing when it should be solid. I've got an ethernet card installed, IN ADDITION to the one that is actually functioning and working the internet. Plugging into the new port, the light stays solid, but it's not communicating and giving me internet access. I'm using Windows XP. How do I enable or setup this new card to handle my internet? The drivers are supposedly ok, and it's enabled, but there must be something I'm missing. Thanks a lot!
My card will do something like that from time to time ~ I have to pull it out and stick into another slot. I've also heard that it has to do with the cable being too long or sitting near an outlet or surge protector, but that's not the problem when mine starts flashing.
It only started doing it after hurricane Rita, I packed all my stuff up and took it with me. Ever since I've put it all back into use, it's been wack.
Tech- what is the make and model of your modem? EDIT- Since you said that you have had probs since Rita, I can very well blame the line. The winds were serious, and you could have lost some signal.
It’s possible that you had a power surge that took out your cable modem. I had to replace mine this year for that very same reason. You might also want to check your connections. Not the connections by your computer, but the ones that run to your house. The constant temperature changes that we have makes the connections expand and contract, which allows the connections to get loose. Every other month I have to go in my attic and disconnect and reconnect the cables so that I can serf the net.

The techies are usually helpful, but the ppl they send out are usually blithering idiots. Half the times they show up to my house, they aren't even wearing a Time Warner uniform. On top of that after 5 minutes of inspecting they say they'll have to call a "higher up." This usually takes another few days.
I second that. The guys they send out are cable monkey installers, not techies. They are trained to run the line, plug the modem in, plug the modem to your computer, and get in IP. That's it. I learned long ago that if I want good results out of these guys, I tell them what to do when they are there. So you have two ethernet cards- one onboard (built in) and another that was put in. Go to your Control Panel -> Network Connections. Make sure that none of the ethernet cards are Disabled.
Years ago, before I got a Wireless router, I had 2 ethernet cards, because I was using my pc as a router. The second would plug into a 5 port hub where other computers would plug in. Thank God for wireless routers. I would replace your cable modem anyway. I have had to replace mine twice in the last 2 years.
are you able to get a connection to your router itself? If so, there could be something blocking outside. What did your cable company say? If not, I usually start with a router reboot followed by and IP renew. Something about your 2 ethernet cards might cause some collision. It's hard to troubleshoot without being there physically.
I'm not using a router. The techies think there is something wrong with my computer, or perhaps the modem. The cable signal is fine, and they did do the reboot and IP renew. No change. The original "card" is built in to the computer, and the one I installed is not disabled...it just no worky. Maybe I'll take the modem in and have it looked at and/or swapped out.
Is it windows XP? Check to see if you have any firewalls up. Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall or Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Windows Firewall Try turning that off to see if it's causing the problem. If so, you will have to go in and make sure that whatever programs you're using are on the "allowed" list of programs to access the internet. Also, if you have Norton Internet Securities/Antivirus, or any other type of Firewall/AV program, try to lower/disable the Firewall settings in that to see if they are blocking access to your internet connection.
