Guys, I need to plug in to the infinite technological wisdom of this board. I have an older PC (Compaq 5080, Windows ME, Celeron, 256 RAM) that came without an ethernet card. Bought one today, installed it with the drivers, etc...plugged in the RoadRunner connection and hit the browser -- nothing. Comes up 'page cannot be displayed', yadda yadda. I've always used my notebook (Windows XP) and wanted to get this dinosaur up and running as well, but to no avail. Any idea what the hecks going on?
With the little info you've provided, there could be about a bazillion things wrong. Go to http://help.rr.com -- droxford
check the lights on the ethernet card... are they lighting up when you plug it in? It could be as simple as resetting the modem, or as complicated as re-installing the ethernet card and making sure there are no network conflicts. Also, make sure you have the proper "dial-up" settings disabled, as much of the older computers had those set as the "default" setting, before broadband came into the main-stream.
Drox and Nick, Appreciate the link and the advice. I played around with the network connections and re-set the modem a couple of times and it's up and running now. I really appreciate it guys. J-Law
