Computer driver request......

I was recently given a Gateway 500x series desktop computer. The sound doesn't work when i plug the speakers in and when I go to sound in the control panel all the options are faded to where I can adjust anything. I was told I probably need to load the sound drivers. Problem is I can't find them anywhere. I run XP pro as the OS.
Can someone help?

How old is the computer? Did you check in device manager to see if the soundcard is enabled?

Not sure. my dad gave me it. I would guess no older than a couple years.
How do I do that?
