This is for people with Comcast internet. As you know, Comcast has a 250gb monthly usage cap. I just want to know if anyone gets even close to that amount per month, and what happens if you go over?

For the past three months I hit 230, 240, and finally 250. Not sure I went over or not because I didn't check and now it got reset. Are they going to limit my speed or something now? :(

You'll be fine, it's not strictly enforced. I've gone over by about 10 gigs about three times.

I thought online gaming didn't use that much bandwidth.

gaming does not use much bandwidth at all

it's the streaming that'll kill you down the road... and everything is moving to the 'cloud' ... streaming is a scam, media providers are working with IPS to rob your money

If you go over far enough (20GB) they will give you a warning by e-mail and snail mail. THEN THE NEXT TIME they will cut you off for a year. If you switch to business class there is no limit and it is faster.
Do not know how much business class is but I think it is in the high $70 or mid $80 range +taxes. I hope I don't find out. Live in Pasadena TX area and they started warning people recently.

I download/stream a lot of movies and TV shows, as well as run a media server on my desktop. My data usage is still pretty low though. I'm averaging about 75 GB per month.

same here, except i get so close to my limit consistently because i run an apache linux server lol. Forward port 80 to my internal IP of my server, and allow remote access via my router.
Lots of streaming going on via IP lol. That's a TOS violation I think.

A while back I went over cap for 3 months in a row, one of which was over 400GB for the month (it was a DL binge). I've also had months where I'd use less than 50GB. Just don't make a habit out of it and you should be fine.

When Cox started theirs, the bandwidth calculations were way off on my usage, but they have since fixed the problem. They have cut off my internet for going over, and they lectured me about doing illegal downloads (of which I don't do). What gets you is the p*rn streaming. Be careful with that.

How many people do you have accessing this server? Only two people have access to my server currently, and I'm the only one that uses it every day.

Heh, try more like 250+ for a static ip at mid-level speeds.(~5M down and 2M up)

I dont remember the exact amount as I dont pay the company bills, but thats my recollection from when I set it up a few years back.

as for the cap, its not a problem as long as you arent downloading a bunch of movies\games\apps. Thankfully they dont really track your uploading amounts or I would have been hit with overages easily.

Take it from me. I go over every month.... and have been for the past year and a half I think... These people are out for your money, so their cap is all bs and a ploy just to threaten you to limit your usage. They have never once enforced me or contacted me about this... I don't think you should be worried unless you get a warning from them. Use away.
