I had a great freshman roomate, but I lived off-campus, and he was 25 and I was 18, so it was kind of a big brother/little brother relationship we had.

Most of my friends are still close with their freshman roomates, though.

Maybe they've all been lucky, though.

I got along with my roomate OK...but we never really became friends.

He was a big time drug user...mostly weed, but would do other things when nobody was around. I remember that he bought a pound of weed because it was so cheap in Texas compared to New York (where he was from).

He smoked that brick for like 4 months.

Kind of weird, liked death metal...but actually...kind of a nice guy...especially when he was high. He'd go sit in his car for like 45 minutes every evening to get high, and was very mellow after that.

He would sometimes eat my snacks, though...

I roomed with one of my best friends from high school. I was such a terrible roommate that he moved out in February of that year. Completely my fault, too. He was a good guy and I was-- and of course am-- a complete *******.

I'd drive me nuts too if I weren't so self-absorbed.

My freshman roomate was an idiot.

Fortunately, he had a genetic liver condition yet contiued to drink heavily...meaning that he had to get a medical leave shortly into second semester and I had the place to myself (and when I say place I mean the closet that was supposed to be a dorm room).

My freshman roommate was a total dork, and this coming from a guy with a few "quirks" of his own. This dude arrived at college with his collection of the entire series of "Dragonlance" novels (didn't know they existed), was a huge "Buffy The Vampure Slayer" fan, and collected Sailor Moon theme songs from around the globe in different languages AND LISTENED TO THEM LIKE THEY WERE REAL MUSIC. He was also one of those "weekly shower" guys, and I'm one of the cleaner hippies out there. Nevertheless, I'm sure he found the dope-smoking heavy metal addict he was paired with to be a bizarre specimen himself.

We did have a few things in common, like an affinity for Star Trek, but we spent most of our time together with our backs turned to one another, dicking around with that sweeeeet T1 connection. He wasn't a bad guy but I wasn't upset when he elected to move to a different room the next year. I never had to listen to the German version of "99 Red Balloons" again.

My sophomore roommate was AWESOME. When he walked in, we both looked at each other like, "Ohhhh hell. This is gonna be a long semester." He was a black atheletic-type and there I was with hair down to my ass, reeking of weed resin no doubt. We actually got along perfectly and had a lot of laughs together. He worked quite a bit and often went home on the weekends, leaving the place to myself a lot. We had a great time watching the first season of "Jackass" every week. Once we both moved out at the end of the year, we never saw each other again, but I had a much better time living with this guy with whom I had so little in common than with some of my "friends."

So, it's pretty much luck of the draw, and keep an open mind.
