Horrible. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. When I say I didn't like Return of the King, you have to understand I still place it in my "Good" category of movie. I simply thought it underachieved. Actually, ROTK is more borderline mediocre. But I digress. Cold Mountain is 3 hours of pure drivel. The story centers around a minister's daughter and a Confederate soldier. They meet and court for about 3 days, and he leaves to go fight. Then we get a mix of her troubles and his troubles and flashbacks that are so poorly put together that nobody knows what the hell is going on. But that's okay, because the women love looking at rugged Jude Law and the guys have Nicole. The acting is supposedly great, but it isn't. Just because you throw in a liberal helping of tears doesn't make acting great. The script is laughable. Actually I think the acting is great because Nicole and Jude refrain from laughing while speaking the god-awful dialogue. The best part of the movie is when they are reunited, and Kidman asks Jude Law "How could I have kept you going if you only knew me for a few moments." Law responds with "It was a thousand moments." The look of incredulity on her face was the same one on my face after I realized the entire movie was based on a stupid premise. Then I realized that the hero of the movie is a deserter. Not somebody I really empathize with, or care about. None of the characters in fact are worth caring about, and none of the emotional power that the film tries (very heavy-handedly) to impart takes any effect. Add some paranormal crap, some "artistic" shots of doves flying around, and the biggest obvious bad guy ever with peroxide blond hair and goatee, and you get this horrible, turd of the film. D- (Jack White from White stripes is in it.)
Actually, I think they make it clear that it's a love story. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Renee Zellweger gave outstanding performances. However, I do agree with the bad guys assessment. They could've been a little more subtle with that. Nomar's clearly someone who's never loved before.
I think it would be cool to see the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, where the Union came up with the not-so-bright idea of blowing up a hole in Confederates lines, but not providing their troops any way to climb out of the resulting crater, ending in a horrific slaughter. But I can't watch any Civil War movie filmed partially in.......Romania!!!!!!!
I thought it was pretty good. Definitley more of a romance then a war movie. Take your lady to see it... I'd rather go see Cold Mountain then Mona Lisa Smile anyday of the week. I have seen plently of worse movies thie year alone.
I highly, highly doubt Cold Mountain can top Wild Wild West, in my eyes... Cold Mountain got a "fresh" rating on RottenTomatoes.com with a 76% approval (and 92% "Cream of the Crop"). Your current fave, The Last Samurai, got a lower score (68% and 55% "Cream of the Crop"). Just throwing that out there... (I still have no desire to see this movie, though.)
You are the man, and you know we will high five on that someday. But what does this have to do with me not liking the movie? I love plenty of love stories. Farscape is a love story... Original Sin, Phenomenon, those are sappy love stories and I own those on DVD. I enjoy plenty of love stories as long as they are believeable. I think you have unfairly maligned me. Vescey - Never seen WWW. Also, who cares what critics think. ROXTIA - I just saw Big Fish, loved it. Other movies I loved this year: Last Samurai, Mystic River, Matchstick Men. Other movies I liked: Underworld, 28 Days Later, Matrix: Reloaded, X-Men 2. I'm sure I'm forgetting others, but I like plenty of movies.
I stand corrected, Nomar. I also liked X-2 and Mystic River. Can't agree with you on Matrix. I thought the Wachowskis took themselves way too seriously this time and their pacing and directing and everything just seemed borrowed from George Lucas, i.e., 2 takes maximum for the actors, we'll hide the bad dialogue with special effects. The difference being that the Wachowskis have obviously met people of the non-Caucasian type before. I think George is out there at Skywalker Ranch surrounded by whities who say, "Yes, George. You da man, George," all day. Last Samurai was good but when Tom Cruise is in a movie, it's always a TOM CRUISE MOVIE. Maverick in a racing car. Maverick in a kimono. Maverick as a kick-butt spy.
What the hell does white people have to do with Star Wars? Just because GL movies do not live up to whatever you have in your head doesnt mean that it is whitey being a "yes" man for GL. That kind of statement is just plain stupid.
Nomar, Are there episodes of Farscape that you would recommend for a beginner? I rented the "Best of Season One" DVD and watched it all. Fairly interesting, but I think I really missed a lot by just watching those episodes...characters just appeared out of nowhere and I had no idea what the relationships were. Anyways, I saw the 2nd season DVD's (it looks like all the episodes in 3 volumes) and was thinking about checking it out. Is season 2 ok as a stand-alone or will I be totally lost by jumping in then?
