Hi, I'm new to the bbs, and I have a quick question. I saw Clutch's review of Dream's career, but I am not familiar with the Kupchak incident. Could someone explain when, where, why it happened, etc? Also, isn't it true that Olajuwon got into to some scrapes while attending UofH? If so, could someone elaborate on those? Thanks in advance. FlyWilliams
That was in the 86 WC finals where Ralph hit the big shot to put us in the finals. Hakeem was ejected earlier in that game for fighting. Hakeem would throw hay makers quite often back in the 80s.
Thanks codell, A-Train. If anyone has more details about the circumstances with Kupchak and/or UofH I would appreciate it. Fly Williams
I think those of us who go way back as Rocket fans, can all agree that Hakeem mellowed out over time. He was a very very angry/intense young man back then. Because of the constant double teams and pounding he took from teams, he was not mature enough to keep his cool and would just explode on some poor guy in an instant. There is only one fight I can remember of his, since he became more dedicated to his Islamic faith. I believe he and McDyess exchanged some round houses a season or two after our 95 championship. These are Hakeems "victims" as best as I remember them. Bill Paultz Mitch Kupchak Roy Tarpley Antonio McDyess A.C. Green (not real sure about this one) Thurl Bailey Uwe Blab Tim Kempton (not sure) Darn, Im sure there are more ....I just cant think of any. Please feel free to add to my list guys.
Dude, how can anyone forget the cut he gave Dennis Johnson during the Ralph Sampson/Jerry Sichting melee?
Sampson/Seachting was classic!!!! Especially since it was in the middle of the playoffs. Doesnt get more intense than that! Granted, Ralph was punching a man that was more than a foot shorter than he was ...but anyway ...go Ralph!
how could you forget hakeem busting michael cage's ass - at least on two different occasions? left jab to the nose on one occassion and a right cross on the other. this was back when cage had the wet, juicy, drippy jheri curl. the juice was FLYING! the funny thing was that cage got all bold and bucked up to akeem, then dream just bust him! akeem didn't worry about that "you swing first" crap. he'd swing first, second, and last. akeem was QUICK to lay the smack down!
In that '86 game against LA, Kupchak was clearly egging Dream on with very dirty play in hopes of getting Dream to take the bait and get ejected. Dream had many such pests early in his career whose sole purpose on the court was to frustrate him with cheap shots and get him out of the game. Bill Hanzlik of the Nuggets was another such player.
Well, I wasn't under the impression he was a saint all of his career, and it is satisfying to know that the Dream would pounce on people - unlike Johnson vs. Mourning. What a joke... So I take it there is nothing remarkable about the Kupchak brawl? Maybe I read to much into it. FlyWilliams
All this Hakeem busting people up is getting me fired up! I wonder what is going to happen when other teams go after Ming. I'd love to see him get someone in a headlock or a nice sleeper hold.
Holy cr ap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I forgot about Cage. Hakeem and he had numerous brawls. Damn geri curl freak. Oh also Xavier McDaniel. I believe poked him a few times also. Hakeem would have done well in a Toughman competition. Hell if Manute Bol can, why not Hakeem??
Because it was in a HUGE playoff game and we came back and won even after he was ejected. Sampson's shot in 86 is still the all time greatest shot in Rockets history on my list.
He had a famous elbowing incident with Olden Polynice way back at UoH. I think Olden played for Syracuse but it's been a long time I do remember it was a nationally televised game and coming back up court, Dream looks one way and slams his elbow back in Olden's jaw! The dreaded "look-away elbow to the chops"!
I remember that game. Thought it was Virginia and that he "bowed" him in the upper chest. Could be wrong . I do remember Polynice crumpling to the ground in pain though. Don't think the refs caught it.
i remember he called mycdyess after that fight to apologize and talk it over. that's atleast what paper reported.
