Its one game guys....and yes it was a real stinker but I bet they come out tonight and kick the Hawks butts. The team was flat from the tip off and I really don't know why but they were just not in to the game last night. Now having said that this doesn't happen on championship caliber teams...
What are the job duties of a coach? #1. Motivate, inspire the players. Here, Adelman FAILS badly. JVG knew how to motivate even a player like T-Mac who has motivational issues. #2. Get the Players prepared. Based on the quotes from players such as Yao Ming, I think here Adelman is < the JVG. Yao Ming has in the past complained about the lack of preparedness of the team before games. So this isn't my opinion. It's Yao Mings. #3. In-Game Strategy. Again, I'm not sure Adelman does much besides just stand around, and watch his players play. Certainly, JVG was much more hands on oriented. I'm just wondering what exactly Adelman does contribute as a coach. He doesn't seem to work very hard to me. He just shows up, and mumbles a few broad goals that he wants to see from the team, and lets the players figure it out.
Sounds like Rudy T. But he must be doing something right, the team won 22 in a row last year, and he has guided 2 teams to the championship round, and had numerous playoff series wins. DD
Yeah, the team won 22 games last season but you notice, they used JVG plays. The JVG fingerprints were all over the team last season. This season, Adelman was determined to change the team over into this image. So far, despite the record, it's been a flop. The players on the Houston Rockets require a JVG type coach. Bottom line: JVG > Adelman FOR THIS TEAM. Either you change the roster to Adelman type players, or you change the coach. Firing JVG was a huge mistake, IMHO.
Coaching is overrated. Look at Doc Rivers before and after the trades. Look at what happened when Larry Brown took over the Knicks. Even Phil Jackson gets a lot criticism on the Lakers forum. Overrateddddddddddd. JVG didn't get the Rockets out of the first round of the playoffs so he's no better then Aldeman.
Coaching is NOT overrated. If a coach takes over a team that needs a makeover, he needs to be given assurance on his job security as well as a large say over personnel moves. Larry Brown did not get that opportunity with New York. Doc was lucky he got Thibodeau to make the Celts the best defensive team in the league. Coaching made a difference there. Quit hating on Adelman. With this team, it all comes down to the players. We have the talent and depth. They'll get it together in February and return to the form they were in at the end of last season. Can we make it past Round 1? Depends on how healthy we are, not who we play.
I think it's fair to criticize Adelman now. He has been here for two training camps and 1 1/4 seasons. The honeymoon is over and it's time for him to start taking some blame for what is happening on the court. Am I giving up on him? Hell no because he has a history of being a great coach but neither Yao nor Tracy (when he was healthy) have thrived in the Adelman system. I know, the players are not running the system correctly and that is another problem Adelman has not solved...getting the players to follow him or believe in him. This team is not as good defensively and probably not even as good offensively as it was a few years ago. Believe it or not, this team is winning on pure talent and depth.
agree. with this team and jvg we would be un beaten right now. jvg style of play is a smart one. always taking the best shoot and with extra pass. he would have take advantege of of the shooting of batier, wafer, barry and brooks from beyond the arc .and would call every one to give 100% in the court that mean would take out tmac and develop the same offense with artest and yao he really deserve this team more than rick adelman
JVG does bring discipline which can lead to less heat check shots but he also is over controlling and micro manages everything which makes players worried and unable to play naturally at times. That's why I have mixed feelings about JVG. I do feel that he was a very good defensive coach though and he/TT helped Yao a lot. The coaching staff deserves part of the blame as well as part of the credit when the team loses or wins. Ultimately it comes down to the players to get the job done. We had a great chance to win 2 years ago in Game 7 against Utah and we blew it.
Sad but true. Good group of guys that are unproven. No one has stepped up to establish himself as the true and undeniable leader of this team. And other than Grandpa Brent, and Granpa Deke if he re-signs; we don't have much playoff experience.
I guess my main problem with Rick Adelman is that he doesn't bail out his players. Whenever his players make mistakes he just lets them work it out on their own. On one had this is good because it builds up the players' confidence, but the thing is he never gives them advice or tell them what to do when they are clearly in need of assistance. We've been playing Adelman ball on and off for the past year-and-a-half now, and I think the slow progress is because Adelman doesn't reinforce his teaching or point out the players' mistakes. After every slow game you always here players say the same things (we should have passed the ball more, I should have been more aggressive etc), and you here Adelman say the same thing post-game. But the fact that they say it again and again game after game seems to me that the team lacks reinforcement and that's definitely on Adelman and his staff for not preparing the players right, and not getting on their case when they start playing like crap. Most of our wins right now have come from sheer talent alone, and this is disappointing because one of R.A.'s main selling point was that he was going to make the game easier for both Mac and Ming. Under JVG, the team always overachieved because even though the team had crappy players around Mac and Ming (David Wesley? Ryan Bowen? Juwan Howard? LOL), the defensive system they had gave the team an edge enough to make up for the talent difference. I think that's why a lot of fans (including myself) are frustrated this season: we have waaay more talent than we ever had, the division has become weaker than last season (with the texas 3 +NO coming off to slow starts), and yet we are performing worse than Gundy's teams. To top it all off, the Gundy effect has started to wear off on players, and they are quickly forgetting the defensive mentality they had before. The worst thing that can happen is for us to lose the defense but not gain any offense to make up for it, something which is a very real possibiliy with the way things are going. I certainly hope Adelman pulls off a miracle and gets his players to start playing his system right. The Rox have already shown they can play it in small bursts, and when it works, Adelman's system is unstoppable with the kind of talent we have.
First off, do you know how complex the Princeton offense is? Have you ever heard it explained to you or read about it on paper? Let me tell you there are so many variables with different things to look for it takes time to not only learn it but get comfortable with your teammates. It takes time to gel with your team. We have been forced ot use Luther Head because there has been no Brent Barry or Tracy McGrady. Steve Francis is not fit enough to play take Luther Head's minutes. He only just joined the full practice session. He is not fit enough to play yet. We need to learn to accept the positives and to stop focusing on the negatives when it come to Adelman. Under JVG, Landry would not be on the floor and Luther Head would be ahead of Wafer on the rotations, while Artest would most likley not be in a Houston uniform.
I hope he is not around failing for 4 years. I think JVG's run here was successful considering the lack of talent and all of injuries. I hope Rick's teams are healthier. He certainly has much, much more talent and has not done much with it so far.
How has Rick had more talent? JVG had a healthy TMac and Yao and two 2-0 series leads with HC advantage. Rick has had a broken down Tmac, and Yao.......IMO, Rick has done more with less. DD
I must give you credit or the fact that the Tru Warier put in some work. JJ from the Hawks gave Shane and Ron the fits with some long jumpers.
I'm not sure Elston Turner is the defensive wise we need. I think we all agree that he is significanlty below Tom T.. Tom's defensive strategies have once again put the C's at the top. Elston doesn't get the same from a better group of defenders. Elston is my main concern more than anyone else. I still question Luther playing time. Plus, I think Barry is done.
