I was just scouring the world wide web and I came accross a quote from a very successful coach. At first I was taken aback by his approach but then I realized that he is a winner (as in NBA Championships) and that is a license to "take no prisoners" in his approach to his players. It is his style - his way and system so deal with it. The coach here is Greg Popovich. I believe Pop has a military background hence his stern and brutal appoach but will you take this if he were coaching our team (see quote below)? Is it necessary? In summary it comes down to winning. If you win as a coach you are heralded and you style acceptable so long as nobody dies. Every touch you make seems to or is considered genius or borderline, and your players respect you more. I do not think his approach will work in Houston with questionable/borderline softies like Boki, Yao and tmac in the fold (ego and psyche wise). What do you think? Do you suscribe to such tough-love-myway coaching approach?
You said it yourself. It's all about winning. If you can win with this kind of coaching, then it's all good. If it doesn't translate into wins, then you're looking for a new job. Simple as that.
Well I don't really like it. But that is immaterial. The end justifies the means. Obviously there has to be some boundries, (i.e. Don't teach cheating, No physical abuse etc.), but I don't want to be dealving into the psychological moralities at play in the running of a sports franchise. I just want to be entertained, and nothing is more entertaining than winning ball-games. Just don't kill anybody and put check marks in the win column and I'll look the other way. That's just human nature.
just take it to your job Does your boss being a hardass bring the most out of you or as in office space.. . make u do just enough to not get fire? Rocket River
I think Pops is the reason the spurs choke even with arguably the most talented team in basketball plus Pops is a million times better X and O's coach than Gumby. There's a different between being a hard ass and being a just an ass.
Think of the coach as a leader and mentor off the court. A leader needs to be both stern and flexible. It's really an art rather science. Either you have it or don't. Chemistry is of utmost importance among players, so is between the players and the coach.
Pop has coached his team to 2 of the last 6 championships, his team was on the hottest start in franchise history. I' m sure he has some room on what he wants to say.
I prefer an easy going boss who keeps me acountable without demoralizing me. I do not feel winning or success alone should give anyone the latitude to do whatever. I just did not like Pop's approach to Nestorovich's issues. If my head coach or in this case our head coach JVG uses that approach I will not like it. If you are going to do tough love do it outsde the media's reach or the knowledge of other team mates. It could works atimes but psychology and life experience in general tells me that the odd are against it two championships or not. But what do I know.......
a winning coach can say whatever he wants. if you are losing, nothing you say is good enough (see JVG).
It depends on the recipients. Nobody likes to be chewed out by a mean boss but some people respond to negative reinforcement better than others.
