I call my son a monkey regularly. He climbs all over everything and really loves Curious George. However, that is a far cry from referring to an African-American, much less a native African that way.
the term 'monkey' is pretty racist i think most people who have never experienced racism would not fully grasp how "bad" this phrase is IMHO you need to experience it to understand just my two cents
Some fans are ridiculous. They think they are part of the game. THey behave childishly and profanely. David Stern will have to make a tough decision on this one. HE doesn't to appear like he is not sensitive and compassionate to racism issues On the other hand he doesn't want the white patrons to feel threatened when they cone to the game. IMO if you say things off the wall, you should feel threatened. Just like you couldn't walk up to Deke in a public place and call him names. David Stern has sent a lot of strong messages to the players by trying to change their behavior. Now, he should send a message to fans, that that kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. DO NOT FINE DEKE
I think the guy should be banned from the arena for at least a year. That was way overboard. That said, it always amazes me how people think any time someone wrongs them that they could attack that person physically and be assured of winning the fight. The guy in the right doesn't win every fight. The a-hole could just be a better fighter. Deke could have run up there and gotten his butt kicked. It was best handled the way it was handled.
Mutombo should have yelled, "F!ck you. Do you wanna sex Mutombo!" i would never call a black player monkey or gorilla. But I must say, VSpan looks somewhat Neanderthal to me.
yeah, but he didn't mean it a racist way although it pretty much ended his career. there were clips of him before that incident referring to white athletes as monkeys. but you have to watch what you say.
I think it's important to consider that not only is the term a racist term, but Mutombo is not someone who is an African American generations removed from Africa. Racism is still real for most African Americans despite the fact that they are so far removed from slavery etc. Imagine how real and painful it is for a man of Mutombo's decent, coming from (the Congo I believe?) a region that has yet to recover from European colonization.

How can some people actually say that is not racist? Yall must have never felt racism towards yourself or are truly ignorant. Kudos for Deke stepping up to that dumb fan. He thought he was all cool leaving the arena with that horrible shirt.
