Kinda reminds me of that Billy Joel lyric:

"Your mother told ya' all that I would give you is a reputation.
    She never cared for me,
But did she ever say a prayer for me?"

I think that we all have a tendency to appreciate humor directed at things we disagree with. Poking fun and things we don't like or appreciate resonates because it feels like it supports our position.

Personally, if it jokes aren't made with malice or too be mean, I don't care. I may not find them ALL funny, but I don't get upset.

Let me tell you what I hate. When I have to go to Wal-Mart to pick up some crap, and there's this big teenage Christ-mob waiting at the door ready to pounce on me when they ask the question we all know and love "Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior?" While I'm not a Christian man, I try to be an honest one, and I am also not ashamed of my beliefs nor am I scared of thier mob tactics so I give them a straight answer. Well that usually doesn't go over to well and after exhausting thier knowledge, or should i saw lack of knowledge concerning the same religion that they are trying to push on me one of them breaks off to go get the ring leader while the rest keep me busy explaining just how much Jesus has done in thier 10-15 year old lives. The top dog shows up, realizes that I am threatening the herd mentality and decides its probably best that I get to my shopping before i convince on of his cult.....errr.......i mean flock.....errr....i mean congrigation to think for themselves. So he gives me the fake handshake that turns into the hand-hold/prayer for my soul. What ever happened to no loitering laws?

The same thing happened to me except instead of Wal-Mart it was in front of a gay bar. The little brats even started singing. it really pissed me off.

Htownhero -- you're speaking of a religion that has been around for roughly 2000 years and has permeated Western thought and culture...I'm betting the youth group leader didn't view you as the kind of "threat" to his "herd" that you thought he did. i'm sure you're a real smart guy, but........

outlaw -- yeah...God forbid they sing!! they should have been out doing drugs instead...or maybe getting each other pregnant...or maybe trying to use fake id's to get inside those gay bars...man...those damn little brats!! man...i can't stand when those 14 year olds challenge my viewpoints...that gets me everytime!!

I am a Christian and I too tire of these tactics. I find them utterly useless because rarely are they accompanied by compassion. Accepting Christ as your Lord is a pretty big deal (duh) which the Bible describes as being "born again" and dying to your old self. While I would never limit the power of God, in my experience such meaningful experiences rarely happen within the 15 second framework it takes to walk into a Wal-Mart. However, as with other things, when someone approaches me like that I generally say "no thanks" and move on. I might suggest the same for you guys. You might want to be concerned with the fact that the words and ideas of a teenager directed at you bother you so much. That fact would be far more concerning to me than the fact they were there.

.. and what's wrong with respectfully discoursing with young people who are attempting to step out into the world and assert themselves in some way that is more positive than doing drugs, playing with sex, or commiting petty crime?

Even if you are not inclined to go along with them on their spiritual journey, is it too much to ask you to resepectfully play along a bit or even just be polite in refusal. The hostility expressed here makes those kinds of outcomes seem unlikely.

Any day now I expect outlaw to issue a fatwah against all Christians. The scary part is how many BBS users that would actually follow it.

it's one thing to challenege viewpoints but it's another to challenge somebody's way of life in such a confrontational manner.

How would you like it if I went around stalking you trying to convince you to turn gay?

outlaw: I think that there is a big difference. Everyone has a spiritual aspect of their person. Are you saying that everyone is a repressed homosexual?

Yes it does bother me. Gay bars are one of the few places where we can feel safe being ourselves. We have a right to live our lives the way we please - and without harrassment - as long as we aren't harming anyone.

Max, it wouldn't bother you if I went to your church and handed out pro-gay literature and made a spectacle of myself?
