What are the chances looking like that you guys will sign Chris Webber this off season? ------------------ http://www.rapmusic.com/texasg/NewMavsLogo1.jpg
A dollar three eighty two. ------------------ "Any event, once it has occurred, can be made to appear inevitable by a competent historian." Lee Simonson
I think they have a good shot, better than most will say. 1. Houston is the active type city he has been whining about missing. 2. Houston is one of 2 or 3 teams with enough cap space next year. 3. Houston has a good nucleus that would contend for the title with Webber. 4. It seems like CD/Rudy/Les always pull off the impossible during the offseason. Few said Pip would come, he did(not a good thing, shoot we get rid of #33 just to get stuck with #13). Few said Barkley would come, he did. Drexler came. Francis came. Anderson came. Taylor came. EJ came. Willis came. I see no reason to think that if Rudy wants Webber bad enough he will come. The Rockets have pulled off so many of these miracle signings that it has become routine and Im suprised the majority is still so pessimistic. I give it a real good chance, maybe 70%. You can be sure the Rockets will come out with some kind of blockbuster transaction. ------------------
Slim to none ------------------ "I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather...Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car."
First of all let me say that in case you guys haven't figured it out I'm a MAVS fan. Personally I think the Rockets have a very good chance at landing Webber. You will have the money to pull it off without having to do a sign, and trade. Like the other guys said you already have a good nucleus with Franchise, and Mobley. Plus he has listed Houston as one of three possible teams he would like to play for (Kings, and Knicks are the others). As far as attracting luring free agents, Texas has no state tax, beside summer the weather is great, and Houston is a huge market. No one thought the Rangers could land A-Rod, and they did so I would see your chances as being very good. I would love for the Rockets to get Webber. Compatition wise you guys would basically take the Kings spot because they would fall off the map without Webber. It would also give Texas 3 of the top forward/guard combos in the league. Just my thoughts on the situation. ------------------ http://www.rapmusic.com/texasg/NewMavsLogo1.jpg
I'd love to have Webber too. I'm not going to set myself up to thinking Webber's a lock for Houston and then not get him. That would be depressing to put all of this hope into getting one guy to be our savior only to see him go somewhere else. That's why I'm setting myself up for the most realistic scenario. I hope I'm wrong.
not happening. 1. he wants to goto a contender, be around guys who take losing personally, etc. losing to the nets with the playoffs on the line doesn bode too well. we're not playoff material, much less championship contenders. he's in his prime and wants to win now. 2. houston may have cap room, but i dont see webber leaving sacramento high and dry, meaning we'd have to do a sign and trade to get him. what will we give up? anything more than cato and walt is killing ourselves. ESPCIALLY because webber means no motaylor and possible no shandon. we'd have ZERO depth left. 3. there's better opportunities available.. sacramento needs some fine tuning and they are set. maybe new york. there's other places he might rather go, and those places have a better chance of winning the championship now than we do. dont get me wrong, id like to have webber, but im not sure if its worth it, and besides, it doesnt really matter, because realistically speaking, i dont see him coming here anyway. keep the guys together and get marc jackson. ------------------ president of the sleepy floyd to hall of fame club. http://www.it-is-truth.org
TexasG, it's nice to have one of "The Enemy" say optimistic things about the Rockets. That said, the Mavericks are a really solid team, and good luck in the playoffs, go**ammit. One of our posters (Rocket Rich NYC?) mentioned in a thread that he attended the Nets game courtside and heard straight from several players and people in the organization that Webber won't come here (or that it is unlikely). Previously, our much-respected Oeilpere posted that the Rockets are maybe 4th (?!?!) on Webber's list (which, if true, means he wants to return to the East; he doesn't act like Sacramento is the place to be). Personally, who knows what to believe. Rudy's funky lineups during this "playoff chase" (little to no Shandon, no Los at all, very little Cato [even if he does suck knob]) make me think something is up for the off-season and we want to keep the lotto pick, but what moves will go down is anyone's guess. I wondered if everyone in the Rox organization was told to "deny, deny, deny" anything about Webber; that would be the best way to go: don't hurt anyone's feelings too much (Mo) and don't let Stern or whomever think CWebb was locked up long ago. As others have said, if we can get Webber, grab him quick. If we know our chances are slim to none, or if he keeps changing his mind too much, go to other options, fast. I wish we could trade for an out-of-favor star (Van Horn, LaFrentz) to get him to the Bulls for Brand or to Sacramento for Webber (although I'd rather get Webb straight up) but that's my own crack-pipe dream. ------------------ [This message has been edited by ROXTXIA (edited April 04, 2001).]
Houston fans never believe that their team can ever get anyone. People here said the same about the Francis trade, signing Taylor, Randy Johnson trade, etc....... Its getting old. We have as good of shot as any other team. ------------------ President of the Steve Francis, Jamal Crawford,Larry Hughes, and Charles Woodson fan club.
Sacramento is dead. The energy crisis, HEB's fajitas, and the fact that Texas has no state income tax ought to bring Webber to Houston. New York will not happen. I'll bet anyone here a grand that it won't. ------------------ I'm sorry, but it's vital to the health of the U.S. economy that we destroy the entire Earth - Chris Stratton, Delivery Driver, on Global Warming.
80%, NOBODY on this board knows what webber is doing this offseason. But looking at things he's said and our possible cap space, i think there is a very good chance he'll come. ------------------ http://www.democrats.com mgh 1925-2001
Don't get me wrong. I just want to temper my enthusiasm. I used to say "we will get him." I will say this: New York would need a miracle to get him. I'm sure the Knicks acquired Othella with Webber in mind; but Othella makes about 2.5 million (or so); where will the other 10 mil come from? Not Camby, not Luc Longley (bu-wa-ha-ha-ha-ha!) and NOT Allan Houston or Glen Rice. So who else? Orlando? Doesn't have the contracts. Detroit? Maybe. He could head home. But he has indicated home is too much of a distraction. Chicago? Er, no. Houston has warmth, gentlemen's clubs, red beans and rice and cornbread (we Southerners have some soul food tastes, don't we?), Steve and Cat, a forthcoming new arena, a friendly coach (from Michigan, no less)....I can hope, as I mentioned before, that our organization has been instructed to "deny, deny, deny." ------------------
And, if we got Webber.... If we managed to move Walt and Cato and, say, the Bucks/Magic picks out of here (another pipe dream, maybe), would a slightly-slimmed-down Mo play the 3 alongside C-Webb at the 4? He has good foot speed. Or would he get torched too badly by the Mike Finleys of the league? ------------------
I personally think we have a good chance at getting him, but as good as he is I think in time we may regret losing Mo. Then again you never know let's just have faith in the organization to make the right moves. ------------------
TexasG: what a generous comment! I'd love to get Webber for the 4, start Mo at the 3, jettison Cato, Shandon, Bull and Walt for other YOUNG depth. Mo's a bit unusual for the 3, but NBA stars play the 2 now, i.e. Finley is a 2 guard not a 3-- though he probably does some swinging. If we could get Battier in the draft to be our 3, I would be in heaven. Bull is a great guy but he's taking minutes away from a young guy we should be developing. Cato is a constant disappointment. Shandon has checked out. Walt is coasting. Los is being preserved from injury for trading purposes, it seems. I think we are looking at wholesale roster changes with a core of Francis, Cat, Hakeem, Mo T, Collier, Langhi, Moochie, and Kenny back for another go-round. ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils. Let's say you guys did get Webber. What would you guys be ab;e to trade to then get Van Horn. I know Van Horn, and the Nets are getting fed up with each other. He would be a very good fit for you guys. How about (try not to trash me too much for this) trading Mobley for Van Horn, and drafting a 2 guard with your top pick. Van Horn's shooting ability would definately complement Webber's in side game (i.e. Nowitzki, and Juwan). All you guys would need is a 2 guard (Mitch Richmond is a solid vet while a youngster is being groomed). Jordan would love to get rid of Richmond by the way. ------------------ http://www.rapmusic.com/texasg/NewMavsLogo1.jpg
Since your a Mavs fan it's understandable you'd think it would be ok to trade Cat for Van Horn. You have to understand some people on here wouldn't trade Cat for Kobe Bryant either. It would have to be a sweet deal for people on here to let Cat go. I wouldn't trade Cat for Van Horn though b/c Van Horn isn't that consistent of a shooter, plus he's pretty bad on the defensive side. Mobley's shown some signs of being a really good defender. Plus this draft has ALOT of SF's to choose from so we wouldn't trade for a SF when we could just draft one that can provide everything Van horn does if not more. IF we were going to get Webber, we'd just draft a starting SF and backup C of the future and fill up the holes on the bench. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Band Geek Mobster (edited April 05, 2001).]
Good point. Kobe's overrated by the way. There's no way I would want the MAVS to trade Finley for Kobe. ------------------ http://www.rapmusic.com/texasg/NewMavsLogo1.jpg
dude whats with all the negativity? not happening? why you say that? Actually what I'm really asking is why are you so stuck on Sac-town being "set"? They made how many quick exits out of the playoffs, yet they are big "contenders"? Maybe he'll go to New York? Any deal like that would involve camby coming to Sac, and then who would play C in NY? Not webber, he said he wouldn't play center anywhere. We would lose Motay and shandon if we sign webber...if we did that we would lose depth? Webber would replace Mo and we might lose shandon. I'm sorry but if we lose shandon for webber I don't think we be down to ZERO depth. Man, cheer up. ------------------
