I don't understand why we trust CHL holders to carry guns in their everyday lives but then assume those same CHL holders aren't trustworthy to carry guns on campus or other places. What is it about those places that makes it any different?
Universities are typically run by people who support gun control. They can't change the law, but they can make campus rules against it. (By the way, CaseyH, I generally agree with you.)
i have a CHL... ive graduated from college... alcohol + youth + handguns = bad news if handguns were permitted, i think youd see a lot of accidental shootings. for the most part, university campuses are pretty safe. there are isolated incidents but imo they dont justify allowing people to carry concealed handguns.
so your basic argument is the risk of theoretical accidental deaths are to great to justify allowing people to defend themselves?
my argument is that the stupidity of youth + permission to carry concealed handguns = very very bad news. like i said, for the most part, college campuses are safe places. there are isolated incidences but normally when you step onto a college campus you really dont have to defend yourself. just bc your are not allow to carry a concealed handgun doesnt mean you are taking away someones right to defend themselves. take a self defense course. carry some mace. wear a vest and helmet. if you still dont feel safe, get an online degree.
But why is the campus itself any different than letting them carry elsewhere? These are people who ALREADY have CHL permits and ALREADY carry guns around all the time. Why are these people magically different when they step onto a campus?
good point although it is ALSO illegal to carry a handgun (even with a CHL) if you have been drinking. So this argument has nothing to do with drunks.
should your argument not be for raising the age limit to issue CHL's rather than where they can be carried?
i have no problem w/ the age limit. i just tend to agree with the current law. no guns in gov buildings, hospitals, schools. let the police handle the job of campus security. the student should focus on studying.
I asked why there is a distinction or why there should be and you respond by saying there should be a distinction because there is a distinction.
