any educated person, especially in the US, should know not to use the term. whatever incentive, why don't u ask him. i don't have time to answer all of your questions.
Davids, It seems that you really don't know the history about this word. If you can understand why the N word is offensive, you should be able to undertand this argument, same reason. It is not about the country of origin, it is about the history. Maybe half century later, a lot of people would forget what the N word meant, but it will still be offensive to African Americans.
That's what I'm saying.... If I hear someone use the term Mexican, the way they use it, or who says it, and how they say it MATTERS. That's the deal. Take each situation one by one...don't blow things out of proportion by expecting the worse of someone (Stockton or Kerr).
chinaman n 1: offensive terms for a person of Chinese descent [syn: chink, Chinaman] 2: a ball bowled by a left-handed bowler to a right-handed batsman that spins from off to leg [syn: Chinaman]
Yes you are right. He just referred to a Chinese guy as a Chinaman. It's not that bad actually..he probably doesn't know the C word is bad. But I hope I never hear him say it again. And who was the one saying a bunch of incorrect info tonight? Him? What is Chinese culture anyways? Food..family.. That's pretty interesting! Oh well. I will just forget about it.
I understand that. But to become reactionary into thinking that Stockton was using in that way, is overreacting. It's accusing him of being racist before you get the whole story.
Rush Limbaugh wasn't offending african americans, he was offending sports writers all over the country by accusing them of having a race based agenda. He was also fully aware of what he was saying, while it's become evident that some people don't seem to know that Chinamen is not a word that is acceptable to chinese people.
That's different... Rush was believing what he said. He was using for political and personal reasons. Stockton was not using in that way. He was referring Yao's in a way that talked about his country of orgin.
Maybe there aren't enough asian people in Texas to know anything other than white or black. Here in California... specifically the larger metropolitan areas... 35% are asian. San Francisco is 40% asian.
the origin of that word is from THIS country. because the asian-american community doesnt go around rioting every time racial tensions grow doesnt mean that they arent immune to such language. this commentator obviously didnt mean harm. but that doesnt mean it was ok.
This is not about Chinese culture, it is about American history. I do believe that the commentator didn't realize this word was offensive, but it is right to point out his ignorance. If you didn't know before, now you know it and avoid to use this word. That's this argument all about. I don't think it has been blown out of portion.
Just how do u know? "Did he do it on purpose? To hurt people? To cause harm? Is he evil? " Personally i don't care how he used it. It's just ironic that he used it on this day.
What if the United States closed it's doors to all the over-reactive, foreign born, oversensitive, impatient, mis understanding, pot stirring no-life's because of this very thing? ***************** Me personally, I can't remember anyone using this term until recently. Furthermore, I didn't know it was offensive. I never really had much contact at all with Asian people. There simply aren't many that I come in contact with. This board is the only place that I have been informed that the C word is offensive. If I were to inadvertently use this word, I suppose I would have to forfeit my job or something? You people have no tolerance. Teach people a thing or two, instead of hacking them down to nothing. Sheesh.
The question here for people who are apologizing for Dick Stockton is would you find it acceptable if Stockton made the following comments. Mobley hits a three. Stockton "that darkie sure can shoot the three." Gasol makes a great shot. Stockton "What a move by the spic!" and Stockton defended himself by saying. "Well Mobley is pretty dark and Gasol is from Spain. Sheesh why so sensitive. The point is whether Stockton is a racist or just plain ignorant its not something worth defending and Stockton should at least be educated on the issue.
Oh come on! Really? You don't care how he used it? Are there no critical thought about anying? Or do you just jump to conclusions anytime you hear someting that *sounds* mean?
Yes, he should have known better. He's PAID to be a commentator. If your using racial slur(s) on people your PAID to comment on, you should know better. I feel like I'm rehashing the same stuff ppl are posting to explain this. Once again, it doesn't MATTER what his intent was! He used a racial slur on NATIONAL TV. I'm not calling him to be fired or anything. Like many others, I really don't think he intended any harm in the word. But being IGNORANT is not excuseable for a person in his position.
My dad’s parents came to America on a boat so they could become indentured servants. I believe the American term is “share cropper.” It was a form of slavery where the indentured servants were led to believe that they were “free”—and they could go anywhere they wanted…..just so long as they earned enough to clear their debt first. Of course, the interest was always more than the earnings, so you were pretty much stuck where you were. Fortunately, World War II gave my dad and his brothers a way out. They went and fought in the war and those that survived were able to come home with a new hope. My dad may have left school in fourth grade (yes….fourth grade) to pick cotton, but he came home from the war with dreams of being a free man. He was able to become a maintenance man at a Catholic Church and school here in Houston, and he eventually became head of maintenance where he retired many years later. He lived the American dream......hell, after almost forty years, he almost made fiifteen bucks an hour. My parents never got any breaks, and neither did I. I’ve lost jobs to people because of the color of our skin, and I’m enough of a realist to know that sometimes….that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. But I’m sick and tired of being lumped together with every other damn person whose skin isn’t dark. I’m sick and tired of being lumped in with every aristocrat, former slave owner, and born into money white person. In fact, I don’t want to be called white or Caucasian, or any of the other terms used to describe someone with my level of melatonin. I’ve always thought it okay to be called an American because I knew what that meant……it meant that somewhere down the line, my relatives came here to make a better life for themselves…...or…..maybe they were forced to leave their homeland and this is where they ended up. It doesn’t really matter; America was a new start. Maybe it wasn’t what they heard it would be, but it was probably better than what they left behind. I don’t know what I want to be called now….and I reserve the right to change my opinion at any time. I just know I don’t want to be called “white” anymore. I’ve been taught that it’s an offensive term. But then again, I can't really blame anyone for calling me "white." It's not like I have a global audience who will listen to me when I say that’s an offensive term. And it’s not like the term has any obvious negative connotations….no more so than the term “Chinaman” has for Chinese. China—man……seems pretty innocuous to me. It doesn’t sound like it carries any malice. China---man......I'd guess that describes a man who hails from China. But…..all these people on some basketball website say it’s an ignorant and malicious term. Who am I but to believe them? After all….I’m the ignorant one, and they’re always right.
