Who here fancies themself as an online chess maestro/master? This is not for me, but brother/other/mother is waaaaay above my league. Anyone want to challenge him for ***** and giggles? I'll put $20 to the tipjar on "not you"
Sorry, but his name is Grandmaster Flash Or Bobby Thibodeaux, or Coonass Rob, or Cajun Boy, or.... Whatever works. And I'm dead serious that this is not me. The man wants a new challenge.
I tried chess off and on for the last 30 years and I only got to the point where I knew just enough to be dangerous - in other words, anyone competent in chess would kick my ass. My game is contract bridge or duplicate bridge - been playing about 12 years and have earned over 3K masterpoints (that is what is used to judge a bridge player’s skill - it takes 500 masterpoints to become a life master).
Funny to think about: Will humans play games like chess or go even ten years from now? Ubiquitous tech around us will be able to outmaneuver any human player. Maybe people will love going to "old school" matches, kind of like the kids like vinyl these days.
I don't think humans are going to stop playing chess simply because computers can destroy them. If anything, many are probably happy they can find an opponent that will be challenging, and do so as easily as starting an app or turning their computer on. Interestingly enough, chess has really shown a big uptick in terms of younger people in the past few years. This reminds me of my high school chess teacher who was always insistent that a computer will never beat a human in chess because humans are the ones programming a computer (this was back in the 1980s). I kept arguing with him "that's not how it works!". lol. I pissed a lot of developers off when I said "I think it's pretty goofy that we still have humans writing code. Computers should be able to write code by themselves." It's coming ... we're DOOMED.
