Anybody know a place to get an older, cheap laptop?

My brother in law in Austin needs something very simple. Basically, the only requirements are that it has to have Windows XP and preferably a P4 or equivalent processor. (technically the software he's trying to run only requres a P3)

I've never owned a laptop, so I have zero experience shopping for them.

    Any help?

go to circuit city or best buy and ask if they have any older open box laptops and give them the price range that your willing to spend.

Well, I've never shopped there personally, but I've heard good things about Mr. Notebook (http://www.mrnotebook.com). I would recommend, however, comparing their prices vs. purchasing new. Used laptops tend to retain their value far longer than desktops, and can sometimes be priced so high, you might as well buy new.

Okay... so upon further review, I've been told that the particular software he's trying to run on it (which is some medical software or another) has some kind of hardware conflicts with Dell's, and that they recommend getting a Gateway.

That doesn't make much sense to me because hardware shouldn't have anything to do with what software you run on top of it, but I'm just reporting what he's telling me.

He's afraid to get a Dell now.

Thanks for the help, guys. Believe it or not, this is helpful.

    :)

I have a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz, 512MB Ram, 40GB HD, 32MB Video, with Firewire, USB, Ethernet, and Modem, Serial, and Monitor output. It's a gateway. 15.2", I believe. It has an OEM XP. Would he be interested?
