The only way I would bring in Chauncey is if Melo or Iguodala comes with him. Otherwise it's a one year rental for Brooks and that's not worth it.

    Billups
    Martin
    Iguodala
    Scola
    Yao

Best starting 5 in the NBA, no weaknesses unlike the Fakers or the Superfriends, not to mention our bench would stilll be better than theirs.

Uhh NO. I would MAYBE swap them straight up, but why would we give up BROOKS, and HILL, and A FIRST ROUNDER?!

Maybe we should sign JOE ALEXANDER, A FIRST ROUNDER and 2008 NUMBER 8 PICK, and then trade him to DENVER along with HILL, A FIRST ROUNDER and 2009 NUMBER 8 PICK, along with BROOKS to get him.

That way our deal will be even more enticing. DOUBLE NUMBER 8 PICKS, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!?!?!

You can't swap them straight up because the salaries don't match. I wouldn't mind giving up less to get him, as you suggested above, but I really don't think that Denver would accept anything less.

I suggested Hill be included because at the pf position the rockets can give up a player without sacrificing much quality depth. As it stands I think Patterson will be the better player of the young bigs that are on the payroll.

If, let's say both Battier and Jeffries expiring contracts were included in the deal to make salaries, and at the same time not give up any young talent, the team would be left with a gaping hole at the SF position. Ideally a third team like the Bobcats could get involved so that the transaction would simply generate a trade exception, kind of like the Ariza trade.

An oversimplification, but it needs to be done:

    GRAPH

For those of you who say PER's are so short-sighted, I must agree. They don't take into account any defense, where Billups would trounce Brooks twice over even if he were 40yo. And they don't take into account the fact that usage increases your PER, but as we have seen with Brooks and his max usage last year (which has no chance of going up so long as Yao is on this team and we want to keep winning) his PER was still only 16 with the ball in his hands nearly every possession.

Conclusion: Brooks has never been and will never be as good as Billups until Billups' final year in the NBA. When that final year will be is up for debate but I'm willing to bet it's not going to be in the next two to three years, which is how long we'd need Billups to be good for as the window with Yao would likely end by that point.

You could possibly take a look at that curve and hope that Brooks is in for a Billups-esque "late bloomer" boost to his game that came in Billups' 5th year in the NBA, but remember that Billups started at 19 and was 24 when he exploded in Minnesota. Brooks started the NBA at 23 so he doesn't get that buffer; it would be exceedingly rare and spectacular for Brooks to suddenly figure out how to be more efficient AND play outstanding defense next year at the age of 26. Much easier to bank on the player that already got to that all-star caliber level than to hope on one that isn't there yet.

Wow, what a great post. While I like Brooks, (as we all do) I still don't see him as a franchise PG for us. That being said, I thought he was better than Billups at this stage, however your post has changed my opinion.

We sholdn't care about the long term here. We have a short window with Yao, let's go with Billups!

give them brooks, battier, and martin for billups and melo...We keep CBud, Hill, and Patterson....with this line-up we can beat the lakers in the WCF and the heat in the Finals:

    billups/lowery
    lee/taylor
    melo/cbud
    scola/hill/patterson
    yao/miller/hayes

if Lee were to struggle guarding Kobe or Wade (which i dont really see) u can run Billups at the 2 and Lowery at the 1

I don't like the idea of Giving up both Brooks and Martin. Only ONE should go if we get Melo and Billups.

Particularly, MArtin should stay. While he cannot guard Kobe, he won't need. Instead, we've got Battier in the starting lineup, and Lee off the bench to guard the perimeter.

In your scenario, only Lee can guard Kobe. Battier will be gone, and Melo can't guard Kobe. Yo uhave more defensive options by Keeping Martin and Battier in the lineup rather than Lee and Melo.

to be honest no one could guard Kobe one on one....what front court would have a better defense Brooks and Martin or Billups and Lee?? Melo needs to be motivated to play D i believe that with this team he we have no other choice but to D up with how hard our team plays...but i see your point in keeping battier

The only thing Billups has over Brooks is his defense and better free throw percentage. Ill take Brooks youth because the rest of thier stats are very close in 2009-10.

    sorry but so wrong.
Billups is MR. BIG SHOT not in the RG season, in the Playoffs
Finals MVP and has tons of XP

We still have Lowry and Llull and could draft other PGs
as much as I love AB, I for one will be all about winners and experience in the playoffs
