I cannot stand this guy. He's like the Moochie Norris of radio. I really like to hear the opinion of his parnter (david/rich lord), but this guy just cuts them off and goes ON AND ON! If you're reading this Charlie, lay off a bit huh?So we can actually hear Rich's voice.
I love Charlie. Mainly because what he says is usually on the money, even though it is not what Houston fans would necessarily like to hear. He gives an unbiased opinion on Houston sports IMO.
Rich & Charlie are both on the money ! They hold no punches, and tell it like it is. I really enjoy there show. S.J.
They are the best two sports guys on radio in Houston. I know both of them and they are both extremely cool people. Their persona on the air is what it is. Charlie is abrasive but nobody has more knowledge of sports and the stats that go with them. Rich is tough but he is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. They go well together. I tend to favor Charlie's opinion's but Rich's persona. Thing I love about Charlie as a broadcaster is that he knows his stuff. He goes to Rockets' and Comets games. He is like an encyclopedia of baseball. It's unreal. Plus, you talk to these guys in person and they love to talk sports. It isn't like they get bored on the air. They are both good guys.
both these guys, it seems to me, are excessively negative about the sports scene in an attempt to seem unbiased. if they were to be positive all the time they would be considered homers and illegitimate. but they take it to the extreme in the opposite direction. palilo today that the rockets last year were the worst defensive team in the history of the franchise. and whoever his partner was, maybe rich had the day off, said that the astros this season, were the worst defensive team in the history of their franchise. i mean maybe so, but cmon. they exagerate negatively soo much. everytime i listen, i just want to say shut the f**k up, man, things arent that bad. and im not really the most positive guy myself you know?
That kook Rich hates to talk about the Rockets. I rarely listen to sports talk but was pretty pumped up about the Rockets getting the number one pick so I flipped it on that first Monday after the Rockets scored the 1st pick only to hear Rich Lord b****ing about how bored he is with Rockets talk and whether they should trade the pick or not and how he'd much much rather prefer to discuss the Kings and Lakers series. That pissed me off a little considering what an exciting and rare thing it is for the Houston Rockets to win the #1 pick.
On the days Charlie is not on the Afternoon show, I don't even bother to listen. he is the best sports radio guy in houston, hands down.
You absolutely nailed it. They do this to sound unbiased. They don't want to be biased. But, Charlie still has a picture of the sign in front of the Summit after the first championship that he took on his way to work the day after they won it all. He is a big Comets fan. He goes to pretty much every game. Rich is from NYC. He's a typical New Yorker. Nuff said.
Charlie is the best sports talk-show host in Houston. Period. I don't mind his abrasive demeanor because, quite simply, he can back up his opinions with facts or at least make a cogent argument...something that can't be said for the most part regarding the morning guys, et al. In addition, it starts getting sickening to hear alot of the local 'talent' mimick Jim Rome's style -- I mean the lingo, the voice inflections, etc....Rome is entertaining, even though he contradicts himself quite a bit....what I don't need is 'Rome-lite' from the locals. Anyway, back to the point, Charlie won't disagree with you just to be contrarian and he's not a kiss-a**. I like that.
Funny you mention Rome-lite. First, let me say that I like Matt Jackson. He seems like a really cool guy. But, I've heard some people make that commet about him. >> Impersonation << Matt: I mean, can you believe this? 20 second pause... Matt: I don't know. 20 second pause... Deep breath. Sigh. 20 second pause... Matt: Paul on a mobile line, you're on Sports Radio 610...
Exactly. I heard him two nights ago actually utter the phrase "We're 'chasing' Bob Arum for tomorrow night....." I just had to bust out laughing. Whats also funny is that a caller made reference to Rome the other night on Matt's show. Matt then made an off-handed comment that he doesn't give much credence to what Rome says.... Have you also noticed how the formats and styles of the shows have evolved over the years? Intead of Mike Edmunds, Anita Martini, Jerry Trupiano, and the rest solely talking sports.....(I know, it tends to be dry sometimes)....the current crop of shows (be it John and Lance, Matt, etc...) are at the other end of the spectrum. Having taken Rome's cue from 4 or 5 years ago, the shows now read and encourage acerbic, sarcastic emails that serve as filler commentary....don't get me wrong, some of it cracks me up, its just interesting to have seen the pendulum swing the opposite way. Now, everything is a 'take', bad things are referred to as 'below average', and trying to line up an interview is 'chasing'. You get the idea.... the only thing better is how many times Granato can squeeze the word 'BABY' and the phrase 'HOW GOOD IS THAT?' into a segment.
If they could find a way to put the Best Damn Sports Show Period on the radio Matt would be history. Anyone the least bit curious on how 610 will handle the Rockets pre-game and post game reports?
Good call on Matt, Jeff. He actually exhibits real knowledge and enthusiasm for sports on occasion, but his Little Romie act is kind of sad. No more memos, people... I enjoy John and Lance's show the best now, despite the ever changing time slot. Lance knows his stuff and John is entertaining, if not the sharpest tool in the shed. Coach Slocumb on a mobil is God like. Charlie is the most intelligent host on 610, I agree, but he sure has learned to love the sound of his own voice lately. At least he does his homework, which is more than I can say for his partner, Rich. I rate Rich just above the god awful Jeremy (is Body Solutions his only reason to be at work?). Rich is usually wrong about most sports and his opinions are based on the most shallow information. Walking cliche radio. The next time Rich actually says anything of substance will be a minor miracle. The Texans play-by-play guy is decent enough on his own show, if a tad bland.
There was, is, and will never be a sports talkshow host in Houston worse than Ken Silverstein. It was torture listening to him host a show. The guy would carry on a conversation with himself for about 30 minutes where he asked questions, posed hypotheticals, agreed, refuted, contradicted, and slammed himself in that 30 minute timespan.
hey you guys should count your lucky stars... in Austin, our afternoon local sports show stars a former Longhorn football player (and NFL scrub) named Brian Jones and that Kevin dude from Real World X (New York)... how pathetic... the morning show is pretty good with Bucky and Erin... but they are more "entertainment first, sports second" rather than an informative and insightful sports debating arena... but its still fun to listen to, i guess...
The afternoon guys HATE ANYTHING NOT BASEBALL In the middle of the NBA SEASON .. . . BASEBALL When you talk Basketball .. you can almost hear them sigh They try hard to turn it back to the frickin L'Astros They annoy more than anything Rocket River
I don't understand this Rocket River, these guys are good at their craft but they have way too much frivolous conversation with each other and don't seem to jive with our beloved Rockets...what's to like about that?
So call in and let him know you don't care what he wants to talk about! You are the listener, not him!! Houston listeners never call the show to talk Rockets. They'll call all damn year to talk Astro's, but could care less about the only team to actually win anything.
