Any idea how much a transfer of title would cost? Basically, I am driving a car that has my dad's name on it and I want to change that to mine. The only problem is it would not be worth it if there are prohibitive costs or taxes to be concerned about.
http://www.txdot.gov/drivers_vehicles/vehicle_titles/default.htm Fees When you apply for a vehicle title, you must pay the motor vehicle sales tax, which is 6.25 percent of the purchase price, or if buying a used vehicle from a private party, the standard presumptive value. You will also be charged a title transfer, registration and local fees. Your county tax office can tell you the exact amount you must pay. http://www.dmv.org/tx-texas/title-transfers.php Here's the form you have to fill out: http://www.dot.state.tx.us/txdotefo...eportError.jsp&configFile=WFServletConfig.xml The "gift tax" is $10. The applicatin fee is between $28 and $33. So it will cost you roughly $40 total. I think you handle all this at a county tax collectors office. There are a handfull in and around Houston. You don't have to go downtown if you don't want to.
