We went to Luby's today and noticed that they have made another change. About 2 months ago I notcied that they started putting the food at the line in white serving dishes instead of the metal warming trays. I guess they were trying to give it a more home feel. I could see the food maybe getting cold quicker out there than it would before but I figured no big deal.

This new change is bugging me though.

If you have even been to Luby's you know the format. You get your food, you choose your own seat, if you need ketchup and it isn't on the table you grab it off the shelf. Any one maybe two nice ladies walk around with a cart and give you more water or tea. (Sweet tea of course.)

Now you get your own food, seat yourself, but as you do a person walks up and asks you if you need anything. So I needed Tabasco and she brought it to me. No biggie. Then she comes back like 2 minutes later.
    "Do ya'll need anything else?"
    "Umm... No thanks."
"OK my name is XXXX. Let me know if you need anything."

    Unusual.

She comes back again and again and again. Like every 5 minutes. It got really annoying.

Then at the end of the meal she leaves some mints (one of which was OUT of the wrapper WTF) that has a little card with her name and a note that says that we can tip if we want to.

    I am so serial.

I liked Luby's. Why did they have to mess with it after so many years? Jeez. What was wrong with the one lady coming around with the tea and water?

Maybe its the lady doing it on her own accord and is not actually Luby's policy?

If she was bugging you so much then you should have told her that "I'll call for you if I need something." Whats the big deal?

It's the fact that you're not dining at an actual restaurant. The format is (or was) that you pick out the food that you want, and for the most part are on your own for the rest of the meal -- like at Ryan's.

The problem is that I thought I was eating someplace where I could get my own food and bet set. If I wanted to feel compelled to tip my server, I would have eaten at the Olive Garden.

has anything fallen faster/harder from Grace than Olive Garden.

Their dishes were fantastic back in the mid to late nineties and now, it's just terrible.

Back to the thread, Weren't the plates always white and not metal?

Luby's has fallen pretty hard IMHO. It used to be one of my favorite places but the prices are up and the quality is down. I haven't been there in months.

The dishes he's talking about are the ones that used to hold the food in the food line. They used to be metal containers that were heated underneath I believe with that water system they use. They started putting everything in big white dishes to serve now. The food is colder because it's not heated anymore.

Man, I haven't been to Luby's in years. If this is an across the board change, it sounds like I don't want to.

I'm actually working there as a intern here in the Dallas area. I started a thread about me headed to disney as an intern a while back but I backed out they didnt pay enough and its like a 6 month program way to long and Lubys pretty much offered me a job after the internship during my first interview. (though I'm not going to take it, I want to do stadium/arenas wherever that may take me)

That girl was doing her job Lubys does have wait staff. They make good money not b/c of good tips but because of the quanity of the tips. Most people just throw a dollar or 2 but they add up...The one I'm working as goes through about 1,800 people a day. (drive thru, dining area and food to go)

(though waitstaff isn't supposed to stop by that much so I see your point)

Lubys is changing. When I interviewed way back in March they said they are changing b/c alot of their customers are dying off (well they used differnt wording). So they are hiring younger management and having new food items in hopes of attracting a differnt crowd. Actually the Papa's brothers runs Luby's now since they got into the company Lubys have gotten out of a huge debt. (they were close to folding in 2001).

On a side note I really should have payed more attention in my Spanish courses :p

I hate most of the changes. I'm equally annoyed by the "wait people," who bother you after you've stood in line, got your own food and drink, and took it to the table yourself. It's strictly an attempt to save money by Luby's (Pappas), IMO. At the local Luby's, these "wait people," also clean the tables, so they don't have as many staff. The tables aren't as consistently clean as they used to be. Yuck. Most of the food is the same, with some parsley thrown on it. Heck, they throw parsley on everything!

I only go if it's convenient to feed the kids.

    Thumbs down.

    F*** YOU
    F*** YOU
    F*** YOU

you're cool (points to old Luby's)

    and I'm out.

Luby's reminds me of grim death. Seriously, it gives me a feel of a hospital cafeteria. When I am about to bite the dust, that's where I see myself eating.

    The food's good though.

I agree completely about the waiter thing. I liked when the women would push the drink tray around a re-fill my tea, give me a take-home box, and that's it. Now there's people that hound you every few seconds and expect a tip. It's a friggin' cafeteria. I mean, I tip...but I just think its ridiculous.

I've eaten at the Luby's at Meyer Park twice in the last couple of weeks and they don't have the waiters there, just the old ladies pushing the tea/water cart around. I noticed the white dishes on the serving line as well, and the food really isn't very hot when you get it to your table.

Also, they have live entertainment there on Wednesday nights: a guy with a guitar and a drum machine/sequencer singing classic country hits.

I honestly had never thought Luby's food was that great to begin with. It tasted like bland hospital or geriatric food.

Luby's has gone to complete hell. The food is garbage and they have the bus boys come around and want to give you drink refills after touching trash and dirty dishes without even washing hands. It's real morbid in their too. The foos is poor quality and not fresh, however they get pretty decent prices. If yall want a better cafeteria try Cleburne on Bissonnet. Much higher quality, not gourmet but pretty good. Huge portions are splittable for most people, reasonable price, very clean, it's pretty much a tip top operaton.

I thought Luby's food really hit bottom about 5 years ago (I had an Italian cutlet that had something in the middle as hard as a tire) - the 2001 period when I guess they nearly went belly up from debt. I occasionally eat there with my 80 year old mom or 79 year old father in law. I think the food might be a bit better now. You really have to be careful though. I watched the asst. mgr bring out a bowl - tray of tilapia-breaded and fried I think. I odered one and it was frozen in the middle. I brought it to the asst. mgr who had brought it out. I was not trying to get anything free- I thought they would want to know. He made a big deal about asking when I had ordered it and had me walk to the cashier to get a credit-refund. I went and sat down with the kids until they were finished and left.

I will eat there if somebody wants, but would never choose it myself.

One time in about 1993 I was in line behind a very old man. He ordered 3 of those fried fish patties. He asked for a 4th and when the lady questioned it - he reached under the glass to the tray to pick up a fish square with his hand. The lady went crazy...

You like cold food and being annoyed every five minutes while you're eating?
