i'm sure this idea has been proposed somewhere around here before but i couldn't find it.

wondering if any people on this board (i'm sure a large number) like to play poker. it'd be fun if we set up some type of a tournament style poker game for one day. just a buy-in, no house rake or any crap like that. i guess it'd be like one big house game. we could pool the buy-in and have prizes with the pool money, like first 5 places or something like that.

maybe the 1st place prize could be like a mini season package to a rockets game, gift certificate, shrug, i don't know.

just an idea. is there something illegal or anything like that about this? i figure it's just like a raffle drawing with more skill. obviously no one would be making any type of profit off of this..

if there were reasons this was shot down earlier, please link me or restate them please. thanks.

it was close to happening once before.

I think Andymoon was organizing it.

I'm interested in play and could even host it if people don't mind driving to cypress.

It might be easier to just have a tournament with cash payouts that way you don't have to worry about buying prizes etc.

I would drive in from Austin to play in it.

We do a $20 buy in with rebuys up to the first hour, at the end of the first hour....no more rebuys.

Blinds go up every 15 minutes.

Usually lasts about 3-4 hours with 15 + people.

No rebuys...True tourny style...And I agree on the cash prizes. Maybe 1-5 win a % depending on how many people show up.

I would be interested in playing. I agree that a cash payout would be the way to go.

I have proposed the idea before and would be willing to host such an event at my house in Clear Lake. If we decided to go away from the prize structure and just pay out $, I could roll this into my normal monthly game and just change my normal game to a tourney. I already have 7-9 regular players in my monthly game and could expand that if we have a few weeks notice.

The best day for me right now would be September 30, the last Saturday in September. I already have the monthly game set up for a cash game the first Saturday in September and the only time I can come up with $20 for poker is right after I get paid at the end of the month.

If September 30 works for everyone, I would set it up like DaDa said, though rebuys would be negotiable. Blinds go up every 15 minutes (I have a computer program that times all of this, but would ask for someone to bring a laptop so that we can run it in plain view of everyone in the tourney) with the goal to finish the tourney within 4-5 hours. We start at 1 PM or so and people who get knocked out can start up a cash game (we usually play $0.25/$0.50 blinds) that will get bigger as the tourney whittles down.

1-9 players pays out to the top three, 50%/30%/20%.
10-18 players pays top four, 50/25/15/10
19 or more pays top five, 40/25/20/10/5

As far as the legality, this is entirely legal as long as the house (me in my example) does not collect a rake. I am happy to host as long as I am not expected to provide refreshments. Perhaps we can pitch in for pizza for lunch and/or dinner (one of the guys I will be inviting to such an event owns a pizza place a half mile from my house), but if you will be drinking anything other than water, you will have to bring it yourself.

I'd love to play. My schedule has prevented me from doing so in the past, maybe it will work out this time.

    AB,

GREAT idea, we could charge $25 as an entry fee, with $5 of it going to CC.net.
