Somebody on another thread suggested maybe having a golf tournament to benefit CC Net.

I could probably make that happen since I run a golf tournament most every Monday. I'm not gonna just jump in and pick a date until I can judge what kind of response we would have. Here are some options:

    1. Sugar Creek Country Club - We have to pay $42 per player for the course. We could skip the meal thing and just do chips and dips by the score board for about $5 more per player. . We need Coke and Budweiser or somebody to donate drinks, they do that a lot but it would be nice if someone besides me could arrange it.

The tournament would have to be on a Monday, actually Monday November 17 looks like a target. To raise any money we need to charge at least $75 ( $25 per player to CC Net x 50 players =$1250) Most of the charity tounaments charge at least $250 but I am assuming CC Net is mostly poor college students. The actual prizes would be cheap trophies because, and trust me on this, everyone cheats.

Donated silent auction items are a really good way to raise extra cash. Rocket Tickets or Signed Items would be best ....Tim?

    2. Wildcat - I could probably get us a weekend start there for about the same money if we teed off at like 2 and finished just before dark.

    3. Bear Creek - I could get a cheap rate on The Masters especially if we did it on a weekday afternoon. I don't think we would charge less than $75, just more money would go to CC Net.

So you would get range ball, a scramble-foursome round at a nice course with your fellow enthusiast, a professional looking scorebaord, free drinks and beer, a shot at a door prize (random) , a chance to bid a a couple of Rocket related silent auction items, a cheap little trophy for the best pencil-whippers and probably your picture posted on the front page (Jeff?) or something for between $75 and $100.

Here's what I want to know:

    1. Would you play?

    2. How much would you pay?

    3. Is Monday a problem, does it have to be a weekend?

    4. Can you arrange for donated beverages Cokes? Beer?

    5. Can you arrange for a donated door prize ( a putter or driver or Rockets shirts etc) (I hate goody bags though, they are too much trouble and you always get Top-flight balls and a cousie)

    6. Can you arrange for a donated silent auction item (the bidding will have to be quick though if we don't do a dinner) Tim?

At this point of course, this is all just conjecture, but if we do get in to it and you say you will do something you better do it or I will ridicule you mercilessly in this forum of your peers.

Maybe Rudy will play, he won't have much to do this fall.
Let's hear what you have to say.

Dude, I don't think we are all rich here.

Somebody loan me some golf clubs, and I will hack away.

I suggest a get together basketball game.

The idea is to raise money not just a social gathering.
So, I'll count you an a 'no'.

I like the idea... but is there any way to do it on a weekend? I'm sure you'd still get a good response from the Houstonians, but for those stuck in Austin (me) or Dallas...

In any case, good luck; I like the idea.)

    1. Would you play? I would come from New York (that's a yes)

    2. How much would you pay? $150

    3. Is Monday a problem, does it have to be a weekend? You pick the date

    4. Can you arrange for donated beverages Cokes? Beer? No

Would people outside of CC.net be allowed to play (my brother in law would be totally into it)?

I've recently got back into the game. I'd forgotten how much I love it!

Yeah, I'd play. Could probably round up a handful of non-bbs'ers to join us. $75 sounds good, wouldn't want to go much higher - given that I'd also be donating a case or 3 of beer to the cause, which I would feel obligated to do since I drink like a fish when I play. Weekends would be better for all involved, just because of the work & out-of-town factors.

I'm a hack...we'd have to be pretty equitable in putting the groups together, just so everybody has a chance to be competitive.

We would allow people to pick their own 4-some if they want and then we would make groups out of the rest using the GHIN computer system that automatically balances teams by handicaps.

Again, don't get too hung up on the competition. It's really just for bragging rights because there is no way to run a fair amatuer competition. I see it every week, sandbagging, not counting their mulligans if they don't go in, 6' gimmies, do-overs. I can almost guarantee you some team will turn in a card in the 50's.

As for beer, one of the distributorships will probably donate all we need since CC is non-profit. It would cinch it though if somebody has a personal connection with one of them. How about that Chinese Beer company that signed with the Rockets or whomever else will be selling beer in the new arena?

I don't think we would turn down anybody's money. The way I would run it would be to take the first 144 paid players. You'd have to pre-pay at least a week in advance because we would be blocking out valuable tee times at the golf course. You'd have to trust someone to take the money. Nobody here knows me so who do you trust?

Really I'd be happy with 50 players but 144 is the maximum number you can shotgun start on 18 holes.

I'd play and chip in the 75 bones.

I just don't have golf clubs. Hell, I never have played golf.

I have never played, but my handicap is 127.

How many mulligans can I have? ;)

Seriously. Love the idea and depending on which Monday it is, I might participate. Keep me informed.

I might play. I'm hooked on golf, and could probably pay around $45. I know that's not much, but times are tough.

I've never played in a tournament before. I try to follow USGA rules, so it's not too encouraging that there'd be "sandbagging, not counting their mulligans if they don't go in, 6' gimmies, do-overs. I can almost guarantee you some team will turn in a card in the 50's. "

droxford, Gene is just being realistic - obviously due to his experience running golf tournaments.

The Masters at Bear Creek is a really nice course, but I think it might be too tough for the teams we're likely to get out of here (lots of trees). Do you think we should aim for something like the President's at Bear Creek where all of the drives will be playable at least? (I'm just concerned about the pace of play here)

Personally I'm a huge fan of Wildcat, and don't like Sugar Creek so much, but that's just me.

    On to the questions:

I'll play whatever course you pick - and I should be able to get that Monday off. $75 sounds like a reasonable price.

I definitely couldn't do a Monday since I live in Dallas, but if it's on a Saturday there's a good possibility I could make it.

Also, I wouldn't want to go over $75.

Best ball would definitely be the way to go.

    1. Would you play? Yes, although I would be the guaranteed loser. I promise to drink the most beer, however.

    2. How much would you pay? I could go up to $75 for a greensfee.

    3. Is Monday a problem, does it have to be a weekend? Has to be a weekend or holiday for me

    4. Can you arrange for donated beverages Cokes? Beer? No, but I can easily pick upa 24 pack and bring it with me

    5. Can you arrange for a donated door prize ( a putter or driver or Rockets shirts etc) (I hate goody bags though, they are too much trouble and you always get Top-flight balls and a cousie)
    Possibly...let me investigate
