Quick question about NBA Rules: My understanding is that under the CBA, a player can file for retirement with the league and if he sits out for one year, he can then return as a free agent. So consider this hypothetical: After Rubio tore his ACL last year, knowing that it would take a while to rehab, let's say he decided to file for retirement, sat out the 2012-13 season, and then returned for 2013-14. Would he be able to sign wherever he wanted, possibly at a higher rate than what he was being paid under the terms of his rookie contract with Minny? Or is there a rule in place that I'm not aware of that prevents this kind of loophole from being exploited? Thanks in advance.
Correction: According to Coon you can retire and then sit out a year. But of course, you also wouldn't be paid for that year.

I would have expected that his contract would have still been in place ( ie it would have expired at the same date that it would if he had played) but according to Coon he is a free agent.
