In before DD tells you cats are horrible menaces. <br> But really, keep him. It'll be loads of fun. Cats require very little to support them. And, they're just a bundle of undeniable cuteness. Just wait a few days, he'll grow on you more than ever. As others have said, it's already over. He's gotten to you lol
Might as well make this thread adorable. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0Bmhjf0rKe8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0Bmhjf0rKe8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fzzjgBAaWZw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fzzjgBAaWZw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Thanks for all help...any tips for keeping him from clawing furniture? I go out of town one or two days a week, I take my dog with me. Can you leave a cat?
You can leave a cat for periods of time that short. Make sure there is plenty of food available. Most cats will not eat when they are full. Dogs will eat themselves sick if you let them. Cats not so much. Clean the litter box before you leave. Cats are clean creatures. They will not use a dirty litter box. They will find...ummm...elsewhere to answer nature's call. Not clawing furniture? Ask a vet or the folks at your local SPCA. They may have some good ideas for you and most are pretty knowledgeable. I would not recommend leaving the cat for any real period of time right now. This is a small kitten that has been in the cold and rain and was concerned about survival. Likely, this kitten needs lots of love and attention right now. Not to forget that the kitten is also getting to know you and whether you can be trusted. You are off to a good start. If there is anybody that can come in once a day to replenish the food dish and make sure kitten is ok, that would be a good idea. If you do leave kitten alone...do NOT leave the toilet open. Make sure all drains are plugged and there are no loose vents, etc. Kittens are very curious. You would hate for kitten to get hurt while you are gone. Once kitten gets a little older, it will be MUCH easier. You just have to baby this kitten for the moment. You are lucky. Kittens are very cute...and need lots of attention.
What Refman said. If you do keep it, get it fixed. You should get its regular shots, but not so important if its always indoors. Much like kids, cats behaviors are developed while they are young. Keep its box cleaned. If you're not one to keep it clean daily, get it two. Feed it some semi-decent food. Kibbles n bits/meow mix is like eating spam. Do your own research. Purina one is on the low end of a decent food mix. Good food helps reduce hairballs and bad odors at the litter box.
Thanks, I plan on taking his "litter" out in the morning when I take my dog to do her "business". I live in apartments so when ever my dog drops a deuce I have to dispose of it in the correct area, I figured I could kill two turds with one stone.
A good cat scratching pole plus telling him off while he is a kitten when he scratches your things. We used to squirt a little water on ours when he was a kitten if he scratched the couch or carpet, it didn't take long till he knew the pole was for him to scratch all day on and everything else was ours and to leave alone.
It seems like you're an animal person. I'd keep him if you have the time. It's better than sending him to the ASPCA.
Do whatever you feel is right, just be a good responsible pet owner if you do keep it, and get it fixed. DD
You can, but you're going to have to teach him about scratching everyting you have. Cats can be trained. What you do is grab a scratching post (and maybe another toy or two, like a small ball or something) and reward him with a cat treat (yes, they make these) every time you see him do it. Spray him with a water bottle or water pistol every time he starts to use the couch. He'll learn. I asked a friend of mine if she knows of anyone who wants to adopt -- I'll hit you up when I get an answer.
