My acceleration has been wierd the last few days.

It's like stuttering. I push on the gas, it waits for like a couple of seconds then it stutters through an acceleration.

    Any help?

Its probably your fuel injectors or you have alot of carbon buildup.

Try using a fuel additive, like STP or any other type of injector cleaner and run premium gas for a couple of tanks.

    What kind of car??

    Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

It's not like a quick car by any means, but at least it used to accelerate smoothly.

    Thanks.

When was the lastt time you changed your fuel filter? It may be that as well.

Mine was kind of doing that, especially when starting up. I have a K&N air filter so I cleaned and reoiled it and the issue went away. When the air filter was really dirty, it was like it wasn't getting enough O2 to mix with the fuel for the explosion to occur.

it could also be a clogged catalytic converter. i had that happen to me once and all you need to do is get it cleaned out and it'll work fine again. as others have mentioned, it is also possible that it is a fuel filter issue. sometimes all you have to do is get some STP fuel system cleaner and it'll fix it right up. otherwise, you might just have to change out the filter itself.

    2001.

About 10000 miles I think. I'll try some STP. If that doesn't work, I'll take it in.

    Thanks again fellas.

THat is your best bet. Your car is too young for some of the other stuff that can cause this, like worn out plugs, bad plug wires, stuck valves, etc. (fuel filters last quite a while so this is probably not an issue here)

Also, check with Mitsubishi. Alot of times, you will find that there are whats called "service advisories". Service advisories are sort of like recalls, with the difference being, the manufacturer will not send out a notice on them, like they do with recalls. Mitsubishi Montero's may have a known problem with hesitation/acceleration problems. Just for grins, I would call your dealer and speak with a service advisor. Just ask them if there are any known warranty/service advisory issues with your model with regards to the problem you are experiencing.

    FYI,

Here is a site I use a ton for alot of auto mechanical investigations that I do:

    http://www.mycarstats.com/console.asp?tb=r&mmmakes=MITSUBISHI&mmmodels=MONTERO&year=2001

Its 14 bucks for a years subsription, but well worth the $. Youll have access to all recalls, service advisories, service bulletins and consumer complaints on your vehicle.

According to this site, there are 3 recalls (none related to your problem) and 14 bulletins.

Damn I'm surprised the Honda Pilot has that many consumer complaints.

    no no no no....

as an ex-mechanic that know people that work in testing labs..

I can tell you with reasonable assurance that you do NOT want to use STP..
does not do what it advertises and they even suspect it clogs up more than it fixes.

for cleaning injectors, I have used Techron with good results and have talked to many other techs who agree with that.

    Techron is Chevron's fuel additive.

If you truely want to get the injector clean, have it done by a certified tech that uses the correct method. Some places will spray carb cleaner and dump a bottle of injector cleaner in your tank and charge you for a injector cleaning.

The proper method involves running your engine on a mixture of gas and cleaner out of a pressurized can.
Most of your better shops and dealers use this method.

Another thing to look at is makes sure your fuel filter isn't due to be changed and make sure your computer control system is operating correctly.
Has a check engine light come on? It may not say "check engine" exactly..but it will say something similar.

a malfunctioning sensor or control solenoid will cause the sorts of problems you are describing.

I'm with MoBalls, when was the last time you got gas? Have you refilled after the stuttering and is it still happening? My car did this one time...all it needed was new gas.

Good point. Thats why I said STP or something like that because in all honesty, I rarely use injector cleaners because I always put premium gas in my car. The few times I have used it, I use Techron. STP seems to be the most well known though.
