Review for me if you will the implications of a sign and trade for Hakeem. 1.Would we have to take a player to balance the salaries in the deal? Say Hakeem signs for 5.5 million for 4 years guaranteed and the deal contains Toronto's exception.(and possibly a future #1) 2.When we sign Hakeem to the above contract, we go under the cap ,even counting our exception as salary, do we lose our exception? Do we need it? 3. The trade goes through, we sign Mo for 6.5 for 6, Shandon for 5.5 for 5 ( or what is his best early Bird rate) and Mooch for around 2.5 for 5 ( same question on his early Bird rights)and Bull for the veterens minimum. We are still about 4 million under the cap (very rough figures), Can we still give Marc Jackson the Toronto exception salary? ( 4.5 mill , right?) 4.If so , that would leave us still 4 mill under...any more help out there for that rate? We cannot use it on a free agent. It is a "trade exception" meaning we have to use it inconjunction with a trade. It does give the Rockets more flexibility in terms of making moves. ------------------ Who's your buddy? Who's your pal? I am, aren't I?
So in theory, we could use the $5.1 million exception and Cato's $6M and trade for Chris Webber. Sounds good to me ------------------
It seems like the only players you could use the exception on would be some team's player that they are unwilling pay for or clear cap space for. Like a competent second tier player on a team with maxed out stars and that is over the cap. And (like the Raptors) we would have to give up something of value like draft picks ( not like Cato )to intice the trade. What team or player are we talking about here.
