    Saunders still likes Rickert

    CHARLEY WALTERS

Rick Rickert didn't make the Timberwolves' talented opening-day roster, but coach Flip Saunders is convinced the 6-foot-10 former Gopher can play in the NBA.

The Wolves released Rickert after their scrimmage Monday night.

"He's made a lot of improvement and proved he can play in the league," Saunders said Monday of the 2003 second-round draft pick from Duluth. "That's why we should have a minor league system, so we could see him develop, and keep his rights."

Releasing Rickert means the Wolves lose their rights to him. Rickert is free to sign anywhere, including Europe. He played last year in Slovenia.

Saunders would recommend Rickert work on his game in the NBA-sponsored National Basketball Development League or the independent Continental Basketball Association.

Has a great touch and with a little more coaching could even have a better jump shot, has great range. And remember he is 6-11 225. He will not gain any weight probably but that is ok. He will be a fine SF in the NBA, can shoot the deep ball, very competitive, is a quiet leader and wants to be great. Works really hard, He was shooting by himself before games all the time and he wants to learn. He has a improved handle of the ball and is a fine passer, does every imbounds play for the Gophers. If he works on his defense and doesn't get fouls he could really be something. But the big part is his upside, he has great upside, very advanced skills for his age and he can shoot. Not may prospects that size can shoot.

Was he cut due to talent, numbers of guaranteed contracts (numbers), or 'love' from the 'Kid'?

If EG beat him out roster wise, then I do not want him near our team. How bad can you be to be beaten out by Eddy Spliffin?

Come on, on pure Athletecims, I think Eddie would be around top 10 PF in this league. His brain is lacking, but is always going to be worth the risk.

He can do what Padgett does.

Not more, not less, I think, though he is taller.
