Need some help. Looking for a good camping site somewhere close to Houston-Waco route. We originally wanted to go to Lost Maples, but it is way too far out of the way. Any suggestions? Would prefer to stay South of Waco but overall looking for a good place.
as I type this from my iPhone I'm sittin by a camp fire at the camp ground for the Sherwood Ren fest outside Austin. All the drunk hazzars when home today and I'm sitting here with my wife's acoustic guitar trying to play along to CSN&Y's deja vu and waiting for this last log to finish burning. That probably doesn't help you but it the most relaxed i've been in months.
Ive checked a few, and some potential sites are Inks Lake State Park Palmetto State Park Stephen F Austin State Park any thoughts? Would be much appreciated.
where are you coming from and what do you want to do there? Hike, mtb, fish, drink beer? Inks lake is good for fishing, especially if you have a boat.
The Roof in Highrise is always a good place. Make sure you have a tactical insertion handy. In Wasteland you want to get on the outskirts. There's a few stone walls you can get behind to snipe from. On Terminal get up on top by the escalators. You can look down that hallway and just pick people off right and left.
closer would be lake somerville. inks lake is a long way from houston heres a map http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/ also there are army corp of engineers and lcra campgrounds You might also want to look around canyon lake/new braunfels area also check about reserving a spot if its a popular campground
guadelupe river state park i have been there with the fam a few times it might be outisde your range but a great place to go
the best camping is going to be west of s.a. or austin. pedernales is really nice and its only about 30 minutes west of austin on 290. lost maples is a ways out, but its the best camping in central texas, imo. enchanted rock is a close 2nd. or camping somewhere along the lakes would put you about an hour from waco. colorado bend st. park/inks lake/lake buchanan. ive never been, but ive actually heard that bastrop st. park is nice and has some good hiking.
Fixing to head to Garner in a few days myself. You really can't go wrong with Lake Somerville...it's never super crowded, has private to semi-private campsites, nice forested areas, a good lake and some good hiking rails.
I've been looking for a place to go camping that has fishing and maybe some nice private cabins that can be rented. My family used to have a spot up in Trinity on Lake Livingston at a private place you needed a membership to go to. Think it was called Westwood Shores.
Sorry to hijack the thread... how is that fair? Is it worth going to from Houston? I know this is the first year.
It wad fun. Very laid back and much better than I was expecting for the first year. My son (7) and the wife and I had a great time. Not near as much to do/ see as TRF but a good time none the less.
is there any good campgrounds around the houston area. I want to bring my kids (4 and 3) to their 1st camping. Somewhere where there is fishing would be nice.
^^ Stephen F. Austin is closest...never been there though. Sommerville is only 1 1/2 hrs Northwest of Houston. Lake Texana would be good too, that's probably 2 hrs Southwest. This is your best friend: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/
Going to Bastrop in a couple of weeks. Make sure you find something now and make your reservations. Most parks are booked for the immediate future.
