his radio show is painful to listen to...not only b/c he screams into the mic throughout the program, but he also is a moron. his vocabulary is terrible (and i don't even expect much from him), he can't remember various words and the names of players, and he often has no point. i love him for what he did for houston sports and he was an entertaining color commentator for TV, IMO. but radio host he is NOT. bill worrell made calvin that much better on TV, and the fact of the matter is that calvin just cannot carry a show. he loves steve francis and moochie, but hates t-mac...that says a lot.
because when we win yao gets all the credit for "leading us to victory", and when we lose t-mac is blamed.
You read my mind. The Rockets lost to Seattle in 93 and 96 because they got away with a zone. Yao can get doubled before the pass.
im a little nervous about the motion offense myself but i think its time for a new approach. i wish calvin was still broadcasting rocket games even though i don't agree with everything he said
He also said he could "Beat any player in the NBA at shooting." Not a one-on-one game. Just like a game of HORSE. "ANY NBA player playing today." ...Thats when I pretty much stopped taking him seriously. I do miss him calling Rockets games though.
Yeah that really stacks up with how many championships Tmac has won right? I disagree with Calvin, but that's not why..
One concern with an offense is whether it will break down under the stress of playoff intensity defense. Teams that win in the playoffs are teams that are able to continue doing what they've done to get there. The "in and out" game is simple and easy to execute. A motion offense requires more discipline from the players. During the regular season against weak defensive teams, a motion offense with talented offensive players will roll like a machine. This is why I expect more blowout wins. Even against better teams it can work very well. The "in and out" offense tends to function more or less the same against everyone. In the playoffs, things slow down and players tend to stand around on offense. When this happens, an "in and out" offense isn't affected as much. The Rockets have the entire season to perfect RA's offense and hopefully it won't break down that much in the playoffs. Crunch in the playoffs is dominated by set plays that disciplined teams can rely on for baskets when the going gets tough.
It's a good thing that Mattress Mac's "Calvin Murphy for Coach!" campaign never even got off the ground.
Actually we didn't really play a true inside outside game because we didn't have a playmaker Point Guard and the big Man was not the star of the show. Tracy McG was! Now Coach A is really using Yao Ming to make decissions more so than Rudy T or JVg, except mostly he won't be standing under the basket. Calvin is shouting his mouth off before the new system is even flourishing. He should wait and give it a chance. If he doies this he will see that Yao is now the star and all revolves about his decission making- just what Calvin wants!
Regarding Calvin Murphy, I enjoyed his show during the summer when I was starved for NBA talk. Now that the preseason has started, his show isn't as entertaining (or needed).
I hope this would be enough to put an end to all the "bring back Calvin" bullcrap.. the guy is a r****d who is trying to imitate Kenny Smith (who is the biggest r****d of all) in his "make teammates better" bull .. I just want to know why in god's name do players who used to be good in the league embarrass themselves by becoming dumb "analysts"? playing pro basketball doesn't make you an analyst/commentator/insightful source ..
His 3's were off, but to the extent that anyone showed up, he and Yao certainly did. Tracy - 27 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks Yao - 33 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks Other scorers (David Wesley - 7, Scott Padgett - 3, Mike James - 4, Jon Barry - 2....for a grand total of, drum-roll please, 16 points). I like listening to Calvin. He doesn't have to yell the whole time, but its still kind of fun. But just because he played basketball, doesn't mean he's always right. He even confuses himself sometimes. The call you are referring to was on for about 20 minutes. The guy was saying how last year we didn't have enough talent. At first Calvin responded by saying that we had enough talent last year, but JVG's system was lacking. And that Tracy wasn't the leader to make those players around him better. Then later, as you point out, he starts talking about how the new system is not needed and it should be as simple as give Yao the ball, let him make plays...which makes no sense considering his opinion at the beginning of the call. He also said Kareem was the better all-around center then Hakeem. I guess that's a defendable position, but not when you take into account Hakeem's steals.
The spurs run a motion offense and it sure hasn't hurt them from being succesful. The key when things start to slow down is having go to players in the post and out on the perimeter. The great teams and teams that win it all have a go to player that is a post presence and another player who can break guys down off the dribble and get to the rim. 2007-Tim duncan, manu ginoblii, tony parker 2006-Shaq,D-wade 2005-Tim duncan, manu ginoblii, tony parker 2004-Rasheed wallace, chauncey billups 2003-tim duncan, manu ginoblii 2002-Shaq-kobe 2001-Shaq-kobe 2000-Shaq-kobe It's only preseason the rockets should be in great shape to do damge in the playoffs. They have more talent and they have a better more proven coach who has been there before,he hasn't won it but is hungry to get back and getting it doen this season. They also have another important element and that is a superior post presence to go along with superior perimeter play which is two aspetcs that you need to win big. The suns and mavs lack these abilities and that is why they struggle and come up short every year in the playoffs.
The word out of Rocketville so far has been that Adelman is good at customizing a game to his players. Clearly the motion game will be the thing but Adelman has got to be flexible enough to realize he has guys who can create matchup probs in a conventional offense as well. That will be a big plus in the playoffs. Kind of like having Phoenix and the Spurs rolled into one? We'll see if he is that smart. As for Murph.........he has always been about being loud and opinionated. That's is the only reason he got the show and that people tune in to listen. To hear what outrageous things he has to say next. He is the ultimate catbird and he knows it. He can do or say nothing wrong. No big deal here folks.
