Anyone hear his show yesterday on ESPN Radio??

Holy smokes he was ripping in to McGrady. Saying he wasn't a superstar because he didn't make anyone else better. Saying he didn't show up for big games, and pointed to the Dallas playoff blowout.

Then ripped in to the motion offense. Said basketball is a simple game...get the ball to the big man first..let him draw defenders...then kick it out. Said the Rockets were over-thinking it with that offense.

I was just surprised. I know he's not employed by the Rockets any longer...but I was surprised to hear him be so harsh.

And by the way, Calvin...you don't have to scream throughout the entire show.

Interesting to here him say all that. Rudy and JVG pretty much lived and died with their big men and hitting the open shot. Looks like Murph thinks the same.

You saw me in the Bonzi thread. I'm not excited about the motion offense all that much. Sure, it's a lot of fun, but as I said earlier, Yao needs to be close to the basket, not away from it.

In order for the Rockets to win, Tracy has to take that next step, and he's not going to take that next step by not being a huge part of our offense in this motion. I still stand by my opinion that the Rockets aren't going anywhere as long as TMac's our number 1 option. Not even past ROund 1. I'll be surprised if TMac even plays more than 60 games this season.

I hated running the motion offense as a player because it didn't utilize my strengths, which was standing and receiving the ball for an open 3 or penetrating/taking the ball to the basket. But it is an effective offense with the correct personnel.

Looks like Murph and I clearly agree on this subject.

I actually think he showed up for Game 7 vs. Dallas. He didn't show up in the 4th quarters of Games 3 and 4 though vs Dallas. And he certainly did not show up in Games 3, 4, 6, and 4th quarter of 7 vs Utah. I was very disappointed in his effort in games 3, 4, and 6. 7 showed that he lacks the killer instinct.

I think he is wrong. If it was that easy, we would have already been a successful playoff team.

One of the main problems with JVG's offense was that there were spurts in the game where we couldn't buy a bucket.

Adelman's offense should help in this area. We can get easy buckets after cutting and/or draw a shooting foul.

True, but I'd like to see Adelman run this offense with no backup point guard and with no Scola or Bonzi, and with Head as our only guard/small forward off the bench. I'd bet his offense would look just like it did in the 4th the quarter the other night. Imagine Scola taking all those open jump shots Chuck Hayes didn't take or him cutting to the basket and not having to worry about getting his shot blocked, or Rafer coming off the bench for Francis, and Mike James playing like he did in 05 for us. When we had Sura, James, and Barry, our offense was looking great. Many thought those 3 were done, but we were averaging over 100 a game the last 2 months of the season. James/Francis/Scola/Alston/Bonzi >>> James/Sura/Bowen/Wesley/Barry, offensively and defensively.

I agree with Calvin. All we had to do is surround Yao and McGrady with shooters, and the problem is solved. Finding those shooters is another story.

Back in the day when Hakeem kicked it out we had AUTOMATIC spot up three point shooters. Last year, other than Luther Head, who did we have? We're still lacking the shooters required to run last years offense successfully (in the playoffs at least).....thats why im excited about the motion offense. It's something new....after a while pick and roll just didnt work. mcgrady got pushed out further and further out, making him have to shoot a horrible shot with the shot clock running down....Hopefully it utilizes yao's passing abilities, and bonzi to his fullest extent also

The shows that I have heard him on, he hosted alone.

Well, the inside outside focused game has not helped us get out of round one. I'm for the change. Adelman also said that he wasn't totally getting rid of the JVG era offensive plays.

I don't know they're names. But it's hilarious because Calvin will be screaming and getting all excited...and the other guy(s) comments and it's nearly monotone! :D

Truthfully, I was so distracted by his tone and his ripping of the Rockets (McGrady in particular) that I didn't even stop to wonder if I agreed with him or not. Does that make sense??

I was taking my 7 year old to his soccer game...we turned it on...Calvin started screaming...and my son says, "Man, that guy is violent!"

I dont think the problem was mainly JVG's style; we just didnt have the players. Rudy pretty much ran the same system with Hakeem, and the difference was that the Rockets had much better role players.

Do you really think the motion offense would of work with the group of guys we had last year? Probably not right? I would of LOVED to see our current guys under JVG.

Different rules under Rudy, no zone defense allowed, the defenses that Golden State and Phoenix and others run against Yao would not have been legal against Dream.

BIG difference....Calvin is out of touch.

This comment is so 2006. I thought we have tried this strategy last season. No?

Uh, we tried that. We've been trying that for the last 10 years and we have nothing to show for it but a bunch of 1st round exits.

Calvin, I love you man, but I disagree with your view on our new offense. Yao will still get plenty of post up looks. It's not like he's going to be camped out on the 3-point line.

The difference it, like someone else said, there will (hopefully) be less of those predictable scoring droughts like there were under JVG. You know what I'm talking about, when we go 8 minutes without a FG. How many times did that happen under JVG? It's because you can't have an offense based on 3-point shooting. If you could, we would have made it out of the 1st round of the playoffs once in the last 10 years, which we haven't.

I do agree a little bit with the McGrady take though...

    My current basketball fantasy:

Dikembe Mutombo accidentally elbows Greg Popovich on the head and gives him amnesia. Since he can't recall the plays (or the players, for that mattter), the Spurs have no choice but to bring in someone else. In a brilliantly crazy move, they hire Calvin and Clyde as co-head coaches.

    Hilarity ensues. :D

Calvin is right but he's not gonna land a job with Rockets for saying that.
