he is a freak just measured in at 6'5 and 239lbs and ran a 4.35 40  time this guy may very well be the best wideout to ever come into the nfl from a potential standpoint, i think when its all said and done this kid might be the best to ever play his position what do you guys think?

Having Reggie Ball throw him the ball was like drinking champagne with a Big Mac.

Takes a lot more than physical potential to be the best. Especially the best WR of all time considering how far ahead Jerry Rice is from everyone else. And even he wouldn't have been as great as he was without HOF QB's like Montana and Young throwing him the ball.

it'll hurt for a few years because more than likely he'll go to a team with issues early in the draft (more than likely a bad qb situation)..

but it may be like watching roy williams put up numbers despite playing on the lions. i like calvin johnson's game, he's got more skills and physical ability than anyone in college football at the WR position. i think he can put up roy williams numebrs.

yea, ball had one good year and after that pretty much sucked. Calvin could have broken some records if he had a decent QB throwing to him

I know testing exists now, but I hope he's not a steroid freak of nature like Bozworth or Mandarich. Sorry for the pessimism, but that's what comes to mind when observing physical specimens like Calvin Johnson in college.

CJ is going to be better than any draft prospect in the last few years. He has the skills to be with Moss, TO, and Harrison...and he's not going to be anything like Braylon Edwards (who is still developing), Mike Williams, Charlie Rogers.

CJ has an amazing work ethic and no BS attitude. He wants the ball like anyone does, but he'll go about his business. He put up with Reggie Ball and never complained once.

(And Reggie's best year was his Senior year...so contrary to popular belief, he did actually get better..though marginally. He looked better this year overall than the any other.)

He's a solid route runner (not great at it yet, but willing to work)...but can adjust to the ball with the best. He can go over the top with his speed, and he can go over the middle with his size. I don't know why you'd go with Rocket Ismail except that you're saying it's hard to live up to expectations, so you expect he won't. That won't be the case here, though.

And steroids?? CJ's about the last person you'd expect. He's a pretty bright kid. On top of that, he'd have to have been on drugs since high school?? Considering how gifted he was coming in and what a great freshman year he had. No way.

he COULD be the greatest ever. and david carr COULD turn it around and have a hall of fame career. there are lots of things that COULD happen. I dont understand, no matter how physically gifted he is, how anybody can start making these judgements right now. what if he never gets to play wtih a good QB? what if he gets hurt? what if he gets a gazillion dollars and loses his work ethic? there are too many outside forces to be able to say with any confidence that calvin johnson or anybody else is going to be a great player.

I can just as easily say "he COULD be terrible, he COULD never live up to the hype". Wow, so all you're saying is that anything's possible in this world?

It's what we see as most likely, based on knowledge of him--and the more info someone has on a person, the more they've seen him, the more they know about his character, the more likely they can predict accurately.

I think I've heard people say that about a lot of wideouts in the past. That's what I think. :D

I'd be hesitant to put Calvin Johnson as an instant success. First, great scouting combine numbers have proven to be flukes in the past. There are just too many to name. Second, wide receivers are probably the second hardest position to pick successfully right behind quarterbacks, you don't know if you're getting a Randy Moss or a Freddie Mitchell.

I'm not saying he will or won't be successful, I'd just wait before declaring either.

Gotcha. But what separates is that people already were pretty sure CJ would be a success. Based purely on his ability and what he's shown in college.

Take his unplanned combine run and just put it on top.

I agree, combine on its own isn't everything and can be misleading. For CJ, it just adds..
