    Clemens seeking $22M in arbitration

    Ken Rosenthal / TSN

The Houston Astros clearly won't be getting a hometown discount this time around.

The Sporting News has learned that Roger Clemens has requested a record $22 million in salary arbitration from the Astros.

It is not yet known what the Astros have offered in return, but the spread is certain to be enormous. And if the team, which has already lost free agents Carlos Beltran, Jeff Kent and Wade Miller, retains Clemens, it's going to cost them dearly.

The two sides could settle somewhere in between, but the point is that Clemens, who signed a one-year deal for $4.75 million last off-season, wants to be paid this time around.

That proved to be quite the bargain, as Clemens won his seventh Cy Young award after going 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA.

    ----------------

Pay the man. He is worth a lot more than that. Also, consider it a payback for the discount the Astros paid in 2004. It will be money well spent.

    here's a better question...

Who lost more this offseason....the Cards or the Stros?

Obviously we did....and since we didn't compete with them (in the standings) last year, how are we going to this year?

you're assuming they'll get the same production out of the guys they have...you're assuming pujols will be healthy...that their pitching staff will do again what they did last year with carpenter and marquis. i'm not ready to say those are a given.

and i still dont' know what the final product is for either team! might at least wait until opening day.

gimmie a break max...look at the situation realistically for once...the outlook is bleak right now regardless of how badly you want to believe its not

i want us to be good...but right now...this minute...we stink...

will our team, and in turn our outlook, change in a month? possibly...but given the free agents left and the reluctance of Tim to trade our younger guys, it doesn't appear to be likely

Not sure he would. I'm happy that Berk is asking for "only" 10 mil this season, makes him seem reasonable. But part of that I'm sure is that he's likely to miss the first month of the season with a non-baseball injury. That has to affect his value for this season.

i was thinking that too...i think he gave us a low offer because the arbitrator would look at a guy coming off of major knee surgery and decide there is no way he repeats his stats.....i think he'd be asking for something around 12-14 per if he were completely healthy

I don't believe that to be correct. The arbitor can rule in favor of the player and he will get market value of apitcher of the same caliber, which would translate to about 15-17 mill. The Astros will up their offer and he will accept a number somewhere in between 13.5 and 22 mill or he will retire.

nothing is ever as bad as YOU believe it is.

clemens-oswalt-pettite-backe is still the best rotation in the division. i'll take that. yes, i wish we had more. but we don't. and i'm hopeful we'll make some moves to improve.

    it won't get to arbitration.

and i'd be SHOCKED if any arbitrator awarded that. $6 million more per season than Randy Johnson? come on.

For somebody who makes fun of how people spell our owner's name, you should at least know that our outfield prospect is named Taveras, not "Tavarez".

Per 790 AM- Munro is asking for 1.1 million and Redding wants more than a million(forgot the exact number).
