So a couple of days ago a couple buddies of mine and I were chilling in a religious establishment that has no set business hours. It is commonly known through the religious community that pretty much anyone can come and go at anytime and use the amenities(soccer field, bball courts, vball court). However, this cop/state trooper rolls through and accuses us of trespassing during "non-business" hours. Basically checks up our D.L.'s for warrants and then tells us to leave the grounds. He also said that we will be responsible for "anything" that happens at the said location between the time we were kicked out till the next day. Are cops allowed to do that? Are they allowed to kick people off of private property? Are religious buildings subjected to business hours by the authorities?
Have you checked with the facility? Perhaps they have had problems in the past and asked the police to occasionally patrol. What time were you chilling? Are you a member of that Religious community? Our church is not 'open' 24 hours a day, so if folks were loitering or shooting baskets at all hours of the day and the local police noticed, I think they would investigate.
You should check with the facility and let them pursue the issue. The cops are just doing their jobs. If the facility truly is open 24/7, let them contact the authorities and notify them not to harass the guests.
get a letter signed by the priest/guy in charge giving you permission to "chill at 2 am" and keep it in your car.
