So, lets say I want to burn a movie, or tv series onto a dvd(s) to play on my dvd player. What's the best way to go about this? I've seen a bunch of sites online, but most seem confusing and require lots of additional software...

After downloading a torrent? Or are you talking about making a copy of a DVD?

    After getting a torrent.

I think most of the stuff I have are .avi files. Could be some random .wmv's thrown in here and there...

You can also use Nero Vision the recoding process can take a while but it will burn and play on your DVD player.

Spend the 40-50 bucks for a divx player. Some even play wmv's to boot. This allows you to forego the "format-as-dvd" procedure, and allows a lot more space onto the dvd.

Or save up and get a ps3, those things are media powerhouses.

Wait, do dvd players do that nowadays? I just remember the last time I tried was probably around 2004 haha. So, I can just burn files onto a dvd and they should play on any never dvd player?

www.videohelp.com has a really good list of all the current dvd players and what formats they play. I watch .avi's, xvid, and windows media files on mine. It will also tell you what discs are compatible.

For ripping movies from netflix dvdshrink is the best, if anything get a copy of anydvd to remove region codes.

When downloading torrents you can usually find the movie in multiple formats, unfortunately dvd is a 4GB download, whereas XVID is 700MB-1400MB for most movies. One some sites you can also find .isos to download.

They were around even back in 2004. DVD players with DIVX compatibility were limited back then to only a few models, Philips, Oppo and Sony maybe. Now it's a more common feature, and some also have upconversion features, and USB ports in the front that can read FAT type file systems.

I have a model that I purchased from early 2006 that is still kicking butt. I dont know the most recent model of that line, but they later released a 1080p version of mine called the Philips dvp 5982. So cheap and so useful.

Why not hook your computer to your TV. Forgo the burn process and simply watch it from the computer.

Thanks for all the info guys. Vinsensual, you just saved me a whole lot of time and stress. Freik that was very helpful as well. So, I basically just burned my entire series onto 3 dvd's and used my xbox 360. It had to download an aac codec, but the files were xvid so they played perfectly!

    Divx is great.

I bought a DVD player with DIVX a few years ago, and you can fit a lot of episodes on 1 blank DVD.

So with those types of DVD players you can just burn the files on a DVD-R and play it, correct? If so, that's what I need to invest in.

Do you know of any good programs for converting video files to the DivX format?

You own a PS3 don't you? PS3 will play Divx files.

The best thing is usually you don't have to convert anything.

I just put the files on the Divx player, and then burn them right onto a disc.

    Boom.

    You're gonna love my nuts.

From what I've seen most video files are already .avi
all torrents are usually some sort of DivX or Xvid format.

Also, from my experiences in the last two days I've found that the Xbox360 pretty much handles all video formats. So i'd just burn whatever to a dvd and play it on there...
(I think if it doesn't have the codec already you can just download it through a free update!)

Yeah but I don't like the play back I get from using the media server function. Maybe I need to put them on USB drive then put that on the PS3 and try that or can you burn them on discs and play through the PS3?

Hmmm, so you're saying you can burn with the DivX program?

You burn them to a DVD, and you put the disc in the PS3 and play them from there.

Most ripped shows you download are either conversions into xvid, divx, mp4, or wmv. The PS3 should be able to play all of those, though problems with certain wmv types. If you happen to be downloading HD files then there are other steps you will most likely have to take.

If its through USB on your PS3, make sure you press triangle and select "show all" otherwise it will probably say that the USB has nothing.
