I am looking for some help on building my computer. In the computer I want a DVD-ROM drive, Pentium III or better processor (nothing besides Pentium), and 80 GB of storage. I really just need to know what all I need to get and how to put it all together. Don't get smart and tell me to go to Gateway, Dell, etc. because I am going to save money doing it this way, I have already tested it. ------------------ Arkansas' Biggest Rocket Fan!
If you don't know what you need how did you come to the conclusion it would be cheaper? BTW, do a search for "how to build a pc" using www.google.com. There are hundreds of links on the 'Net. It's best to have someone who knows what they're doing walk you through it. ... 57% faster than a pentium. ------------------ Ceo of the Walt Williams and Lisa Malosky fan club. atheistalliance.org
Heck, in some tests my 750 Athlon is 57% faster than a P4 . . . Do they still use "Gaussian Blur from Photoshop" as their comparison test? ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down"
With 57% less software available. So why are you only considering Intel? AMD is making faster chips and selling them for less. And not only are the CPU's cheaper but you don't need to buy expensive RDRAM. I plan on unpgrading in a few months but I've decided (for now) on an AMD 1.2 Ghz Thunderbird w/ 256MB DDR ram. By the way, what ever you do don't get a P4. They have this incredible design flaw that when the CPU gets overloaded it just skips every other clock cycle. In other words when you processer is busy and needs the cycles the most your P4 will go from 1.5Gz to 750Mz. It's rediculus. In other words you are making a big mistake by not even considering AMD. ------------------
Well for what I want in a computer I have added up the costs of all the parts I think I need versus buying it from retail and for what I want in my computer I going to save $500-$700. The stuff I am really confused about is what type of motherboard I will need, the case type (I want at least four slots for ROM drives), and other various objects (battery among other things). I also need help on how to put it all together. ------------------ Arkansas' Biggest Rocket Fan!
I have an uneasy feeling about this idea. Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! Resistance is futile....you will be assimilated.
You might consider buying a bare bones system with the motherboard and processor you want, and building up from there. That way you get an actual warranty, and the hard parts out of the way -- motherboard etc. assembled, operating software (licensed & loaded), etc. Then add the DVD rom, memory, and so on. Check out www.microcashe.com. They have stores in Houston. ------------------ Stay Cool...
Lil Pun, Post the specs for your system as to what you have in mind (speeds + quality/brand names?) and the prices that you expect to pay for each component. Those Bare Bones machines can be the way to go, though you'll miss out on much of the frustration... I mean excitement inherent in building one's own system if you just buy a box with a processor and motherboard already in it. ------------------ Houston Sports Board Film Dallas.com
i would seriously recommend a AMD Thunderbrid. The P4's were apparently recalled when they were first released and Intel is starting to make crappy chips too. AMD is faster, better, run cooler, and most importantly cheaper. ------------------
If you are trying to save $$ go with the AMD Thunderbird barebones system. If you are not too worried with cost I have yet to have any problems with my P4 that I built myself. And it benches just fine. If you are into games, combine it with a good GeForce based video card and you will be very happy. Also I have used Apple G4 w/dual G4 processors at my work and they are very fast. But not for everyone because of limited software. Alot of people who dont like G4's have never used them. For your DVD-rom I would get Creative Labs. I just have had good luck with them. ------------------ "I may be mistaken, but I'm never wrong" -Barkley
I'd go with an ASUS motherboard if I were you. Don't let them scare you into buying a store-built computer; it really isn't difficult to build one. Although I would really doubt that you will save $500+ by doing so, unless you build yours with substandard parts. ------------------ I'm about to boldly go where many men have gone before. Here you go Mango: Pentium III motherboard - $263.00 Pentium III processor - $212 8 bay tower case - $15 RDRAM 128MB - $95 EIDE 80.0 GB hard drive - $200 8x DVD drive - $70 10x CD-RW (already have) 3.5 floppy disk drive - $12 GeForce2 Pro 64MB - $185 Sound Card - $20 DSL/Cable modem - $110 Ethernet Network Card - $10 Battery 400 W - $80 Various cables, cords, etc. - ??? 17" monitor (already have) Printer - (already have) Scanner - (already have) All the prices listed above are for sure and not guesses. See this is what I needed help on. Do I have everything listed which I need? If not what am I missing? BTW - I have a computer already, obviously, and would like to update it but it is a AMD K-6 2 400 and it has given me a lot of trouble and this is why I have left out AMD processors because I had a PI and it worked fine. If I can update it to a P III then please tell me that I can without replacing everything on the inside and I'll just do that. ------------------ Arkansas' Biggest Rocket Fan!
This is ungodly high for a single-processor mobo. Is it a dual-processor mobo? Hell, it's expensive for a dual-processor mobo, too. Hehe. What mobo is it? Find out. How fast is the processor? If it's 1 GHz, it's a good deal. If it's anything slower, you can probably get a better deal. If it's slower than 933 MHz, you're getting screwed. Any 8 bay case that's this cheap scares the hell out of me. LOL! For starters, why do you need a server case? Secondly, make sure this comes with a power supply, too. Even the junkiest cases with a power supply included cost more than this . Save yourself some money and buy PC133 RAM. Good deal. Is this the 5400 RPM Maxtor? I just bought a 16x for about $6-$10 more + shippping. You can get a 12x for about this much shipping included. You still use those things? You can find them around town for about $8-$10, but no biggie. Good price. Who makes it? I'd rather shell out about $40-$50 for a SB Live Value Edition OEM card. Or is this a Live you're getting a great deal on? What is it? A DSL modem or a Cable modem? It's a 2-in-1? Anyway, I'm ignorant about these things. Good. Is it 10 or 100 Megabit? Who makes it? Make sure you're getting IDE cables for your hard drive and dvd drive. They don't cost much, so if you don't get any with the drives, you can always drop by some computer or electronics store and get a couple. You probably already have an audio cable for your cd rom drive, so that's no big deal (people always forget that). I can't think of anything else at the moment, but then I'm tired and sleepy and about to go take a nap... maybe somebody else'll think of something. AMD still rules!!!! DOWN WITH INTEL!!! ------------------ Yugo grills, Yugo mills, Check out the oil my Yugo spills...
I also need to ask this question. How do I put all my files on my old hard drive on to the new hard drive? ------------------ Arkansas' Biggest Rocket Fan!
Uh Lil Pun? Why don't you have the dr. build it for ya? I'm sure he'll give ya good deal. ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.

You save your data files by copying them onto the new one. You can have both hard drives in the pc. You'll need to re-install your applications and Windows (if that's what you're using). ------------------ Yugo grills, Yugo mills, Check out the oil my Yugo spills...
