If you don't know what you need how did you come to the conclusion it would be cheaper?

BTW, do a search for "how to build a pc" using www.google.com. There are hundreds of links on the 'Net.

It's best to have someone who knows what they're doing walk you through it.

Heck, in some tests my 750 Athlon is 57% faster than a P4 . . .

So why are you only considering Intel? AMD is making faster chips and selling them for less. And not only are the CPU's cheaper but you don't need to buy expensive RDRAM. I plan on unpgrading in a few months but I've decided (for now) on an AMD 1.2 Ghz Thunderbird w/ 256MB DDR ram.

By the way, what ever you do don't get a P4. They have this incredible design flaw that when the CPU gets overloaded it just skips every other clock cycle. In other words when you processer is busy and needs the cycles the most your P4 will go from 1.5Gz to 750Mz. It's rediculus.

In other words you are making a big mistake by not even considering AMD.

You might consider buying a bare bones system with the motherboard and processor you want, and building up from there. That way you get an actual warranty, and the hard parts out of the way -- motherboard etc. assembled, operating software (licensed & loaded), etc. Then add the DVD rom, memory, and so on.

Those Bare Bones machines can be the way to go, though you'll miss out on much of the frustration... I mean excitement inherent in building one's own system if you just buy a box with a processor and motherboard already in it.

i would seriously recommend a AMD Thunderbrid. The P4's were apparently recalled when they were first released and Intel is starting to make crappy chips too. AMD is faster, better, run cooler, and most importantly cheaper.

If you are trying to save $$ go with the AMD Thunderbird barebones system. If you are not too worried with cost I have yet to have any problems with my P4 that I built myself. And it benches just fine. If you are into games, combine it with a good GeForce based video card and you will be very happy. Also I have used Apple G4 w/dual G4 processors at my work and they are very fast. But not for everyone because of limited software. Alot of people who dont like G4's have never used them. For your DVD-rom I would get Creative Labs. I just have had good luck with them.

I'd go with an ASUS motherboard if I were you. Don't let them scare you into buying a store-built computer; it really isn't difficult to build one. Although I would really doubt that you will save $500+ by doing so, unless you build yours with substandard parts.

This is ungodly high for a single-processor mobo. Is it a dual-processor mobo? Hell, it's expensive for a dual-processor mobo, too. Hehe. What mobo is it? Find out.

How fast is the processor? If it's 1 GHz, it's a good deal. If it's anything slower, you can probably get a better deal. If it's slower than 933 MHz, you're getting screwed.

Any 8 bay case that's this cheap scares the hell out of me. LOL! For starters, why do you need a server case? Secondly, make sure this comes with a power supply, too. Even the junkiest cases with a power supply included cost more than this .

Save yourself some money and buy PC133 RAM.

I just bought a 16x for about $6-$10 more + shippping. You can get a 12x for about this much shipping included.

You still use those things? You can find them around town for about $8-$10, but no biggie.

Who makes it? I'd rather shell out about $40-$50 for a SB Live Value Edition OEM card. Or is this a Live you're getting a great deal on?

Make sure you're getting IDE cables for your hard drive and dvd drive. They don't cost much, so if you don't get any with the drives, you can always drop by some computer or electronics store and get a couple. You probably already have an audio cable for your cd rom drive, so that's no big deal (people always forget that). I can't think of anything else at the moment, but then I'm tired and sleepy and about to go take a nap... maybe somebody else'll think of something.

You save your data files by copying them onto the new one. You can have both hard drives in the pc. You'll need to re-install your applications and Windows (if that's what you're using).
