River Aug 1 08:05 PM US/Eastern MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A four-lane interstate bridge spanning the Mississippi River collapsed during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending vehicles and tons of concrete crashing into the water. The entire span of the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed about 6:05 p.m. A tractor-trailer caught fire, and flame and black smoke billowed into the sky. Local television stations captured video of injured people being carried up the riverbank. There was no official word on injuries, but dozens of rescue vehicles were there. Divers were also in the water. Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that aren't completely in the water.

This is why I hate going to Memphis. You have to cross I-55 or I-40 bridge. Geez, I hope everybody is OK.
Not a good day for bridges, bridge under construction collapsed in Cali this morning. Looks like there's a school bus w/ passengers involved in this one. Hope our friends rocketsjudoka and sishir are nowhere near this.
I recently went accross this one on my trip to virginia recently... Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, connects VA to MD http://www.cbbt.com/ btw, 24 miles long. $12 EACH WAY to go accross the bridge.
That one is 7 miles long. I had to drive over that bridge to and from work two summers ago. Worst drive ever. The causeway bridge over Lake Ponchatrain is 24 miles long. I can't imagine what it is like to drive over that everyday.
I hope our MN residents check in. I know bobrek and Sishir Chang are up there. And Rockets Fan Trapped in MN. Any word on casualties yet? Hope they're minimal. They said since there was construction, not all the lanes were open, so that's good.
there is one over the atchafalaya swamp that is ~22 miles. the bridge between the i-55 exit and the exit for loyola is ~7 miles long and the causeway is 24 miles long (worlds longest bridge).
