Brent Price was one of my all-time favorite Rockets. It truly was a shame that his injuries prevented him from being the player he was capable of being for the Rockets. He was brought in to be the starter with Drexler, Elie, Barkley and Hakeem. That would have been a GREAT lineup with a healthy price. Even as a hobbled, injury-riddled version of himself, he was a competent backup to Matt Maloney. With a healthy Brent Price, I think the Rockets would have gone to the NBA Finals in 1997. True story (and one of the reasons why I loved him as a player): He blew out his knee diving for a loose ball . . . in a PRESEASON game. He was a real gamer, no matter what the situation.
BP was finally getting untracked and began looking like the acquisition Rudy T thought he got when BOOM down goes Price. IMHO the Brent Price who was rocking immediately before the blow-out would have been the difference to get to Michael in the spring of '97. And beat the Jordanaires! You betcha !!!
I think that was the same year the Rockets put an effort into signing Gary Payton away from the Sonics. I'm sure the results would have been different in '97 if we had Hardaway or Payton instead of Price
Bulls vs Rockets in the finals. Hardaway or Payton would have guarded Stockton on that heart breaker of a shot.
All I remember is a game when he was with the Bullets and played against us, he had like 30 points and 7 3s We were all thinkin, what if we had that guy playing PG for us, with Hakeem getting him wide open looks all day. And sure enuf that off season CD got him....Unfortunately it just didnt work out for him. Poor guy came back from one ACL surgery, and few games later, goes down again....even Bill worell knew it was bad right away 'I think he knows what it is'
Really? Wow, I didn't know this. I was only about 10 but I remember thinking IF we only had a good pg all year that year. Matt Maloney, Sedale Threatte, and I remember hoping Emanuel Davis would be the savior .
I remember him doing a Elvis impression during the Tux & Tines every year. They would show it at half time. I remember saying to my self, "At least he's doing something. Entertaining the owner."
interesting thread topic in a way. What I don't get is why you made a thread to inquire about this. I'm not asking in a pseudo-moderator way. It's just that usually when people look to the past, it's to help them with something in the now. Are you doing that? If not, I'm confused with this thread.
I remember that! I wanna say that we were playing the Bulls. This is when Calvin Murphy said that Price needed to put a sticker on himself saying "Fragile: Handle with Care"
hey man, matt maloney played in all 82 games (it's hard for us to say that nowadays with this team) in his rookie year and helped us win 57 games (hehe jk). i liked the dude though. brent was basically a bust w/ us b/c of injuries. he struggled in washington before one good year. hopefully brooks will solve our PG troubles.
We gave that bum a 6 yr, $18M contract one offseason after he got hot and lit us up for like 35 points one night the previous year. Certified bust.
I loved Brent Price. He wrecked his body diving for every loose ball. He played harder than hell. I was really sorry to see him go.
Say what you want about Brent Price but we are in the Finals in 96-97 if he stays healthy and it is him on the court rather than Maloney/Threatt. Don't get him confused with Matt Maloney. Brent Price was pretty good but just couldn't stay healthy.
