You've got to go to the North End to get some Italian. Excellent stuff. I'd also recommend trying some seafood. Legal is good, if you don't want to take a risk. The Old Union Oyster House (near the North End) is also good and is the oldest restaurant in the US. If your'e looking for more casual fair, make sure you go to one of the corner delis or pizzarias. I'm only familiar w/the one's near BC, but they're all over town, and kick Subway's and Pizza Hut's butt when it comes to good tasting food of that kind. The Freedom Trail is pretty cool, if you like history. You start in the Common and it ends around Bunker Hill. It's quite a walk, but it's worth it. You should walk down Newbury St. Good shopping, good cafes, great atmosphere. Cambridge is overrated imo, but there's plenty of quirky shops and cafes. Some people also enjoy Jamaica Plain. It's interesting - lots of thrift shops, etc... but I didn't like it too much. Blue Man Group has a base in Boston (though they usually sell out), and there are a variety of good comedy clubs as well, though the one I liked best closed. There are a lot around the Boylston T-stop, IIRC. The Boston Pops is also pretty good. They give free concerts in the Common some times, so check that if they're playing. If you enjoy clubbing, Lansdown street is a terrific place to go. It's near Fenway, and there are a # of great clubs. I always liked the Avalon best. Fenway Park, of course, is nearby and if the Sox our in town it's a terrific atmosphere (though the seats are horribly cramped). There's a ton of good museums. My favorite is MFA, which is on the E Green Line. The Museum of Science is good, too, and there are neat laser shows to cool music most nights. The New England Revolution are a bit out of town at Foxborough stadium, if you like soccer! If you've got the time, I'd take a trip to Cape Cod. It's only 45 mins by bus, and the beaches are beautiful. Not great for swimming, but pretty and the towns are picturesque as well. If you have any questions, let me know. EDIT: PS, Don't go to Cheers! Yeah, yeah... I know, every tourist wants to... but the food is overpriced and not that good.
Hey, I went there (I think)! I was there for a couple of days last year for a wedding. Got to see and do pretty much nothing - all wedding stuff. But I did go to that place before I left. Overpriced as hell! But I thought it was neat and knowing it has that distinction makes me feel even better about it. Actually we ate in the bar area - didn't realize there was another dining area upstairs. Thanks for the tidbit.
I lived in Cambridge for two years and tour buses always drove past my apartment. I always wondered what they were showing the tourists. I guess Harvard Square is a nice place to visit if you go to Cambridge. Blue Man Group has been in Boston forever and I have never had problems getting tickets.
Take the walking tour of the Revolution sites. It's offered by the US Parks Department and departs from their office near Fanuiel Hall every hour. Great Italian food in the North End. Check out the bars behind the outfield at Fenway Park. Stay away from Cheers....tourist ripoff.
bad Anti! picking one of their worst songs... Well, we were just another band out of Boston On the road and tryin' to make ends meet Playin' out of bars, sleepin' in our cars And we practiced right out in the street No, we didn't have much money We barely made enough to survive But when we got up on stage, and got ready to play people came alive now, that's a definitive Boston song!
Sweet. I'll be there Sept 22-27th. Chatham. Thanks guys for the info. Ill be at Fenway for the Orioles game. good fun.
I would definitely visit the U.S.S. Consitution and visit Fenway. Going to Fenway for a baseball fan is like a pilgrimage to Mecca. I just wish I could get one of those seats on top of the Monster.
And when going to Fenway, show up a couple of hours before gametime and check out the scene around the ballpark. There is a bar called "The Dugout" across the street from the main gate at Fenway that serves 50 cent draft beer until gametime. Plus there are street food vendors and you can buy food on the street and bring it into the ballpark.
Those seats are awesome bama.... I got to watch the Angels beat Boston from up there. Nomar and Troy Glaus hit one over my head. Best of all I only paid $7 for the seats.
im from boston originally. im flying up august 1-8 to visit relatives in marshfield on the cape. great town with lots to do. fenways a lock and eat as much lobster as you can for pretty cheap. plymouth plantation is a recreation of a pilgrim colony with actors and everything. pretty cool stuff. also lots of bars and a recreatioon of the mayflower. sorry i get into the historical stuff
