Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal

Well Jeff, now I know why you became a vegetarian...This book was definitely an interesting, if not stomach twinging experience. The Author doesn't focus so much on what actually goes on in the various fast food resturants as much as what happens "behind the scenes" in the big meat slaughterhouses, the plight of American potato farmers and cattle ranchers, the intense marketing efforts of the big fast food frachises towards kids, and where the flavor for a lot of food REALLY comes from...

For instance, McDonald's used to cook all of it's deep fried products in 10% vegetable oil and 90% beef tallow, which is what gave their fries and McNuggets their characteristic flavor...Well, they switched to 100% vegetable oil amid complaints that their food caused too much heart disease, so now they put artificial beef flavor in their fries and nuggets to make them taste the way they used to...I swear, you CAN taste a hint of beef in a Chicken McNugget if you really think about it...

Anyways, the book did drag a bit in some parts like the chapter on fast food history (there's actually a correlation between the founder of McDonalds and Walt Disney), but overall it was a pretty good read

There's still NO way I can be a vegetarian, however...

Vegetarian or no, fast food is some of the worst stuff on the planet. That doesn't stop me from grabbing some fries or a taquito from Whataburger every now and again! [IMG]

Jeff, this is a serious question, so don't think I'm trying to be a smartass like usual -- why do you find it okay to eat eggs? Forgive my ignorance, but isn't that like killing a chicken?

It's not a chicken yet. Honestly, I have struggled with eating eggs at times, but I still believe that there is a difference between life and the potential for it.
