Just came across this. I've no idea how many this will resonate with, but this was my HS days. (and I was awful) but we still hung out with guys that had their own board sponsors. Danny Webster, Chris Miller. Dan McFarlane was the little brother in the group and he's probably the most famous Houston Skater these days.
Also posted this on FB. Dan's brother who I grew up with posted this: i moved to the epicenter of this... I'm by the Del Mar park which is now a puttputt and driving range... Mike McGill has a skateshop in Encinitas,,, Tony and Cab live in Carlsbad...
I recall several of my friends having half pipes in their back yard. I also recall going to abandoned apartments and skating the pools, and then hanging out with the homeless guys that lived there. Damn, I am old.
i remember danny webster. british-texan guy. he was at the skatepark of houston a lot when i was there in the late 80's/early 90's. i was actually talking to someone about EZ-7 a couple days ago, which is the first time i even thought of that place in years. all the old movies are up on youtube...i have to live vicariously though them b/c i wouldnt dare try to skate at this point in my life. it would be a middle-age bone-break waiting to happen.
When I saw this thread title I was like "WTH, people on here know about my older brother's competitive paintball team back in the 90s?" It was named Bonez Brigade but ...same same?
If you have the time...dig around (or watch this) on the life of Christian Hosoi. Very interesting path and experiences...
Thanks for this. I'll definitely listen. There's an entire documentary on Hosoi that's really interesting. I met Hosoi a couple of times and was supposed to do some work with him at one point - still have his cell # in my phone, but sadly I lost the voicemail I had from him when I got a new phone.
wow! thats cool. i remember swimming at a pool close to there that had a really high hi-dive. i looked it up on google and its still there. i also remember skating at the elementary school across the street from there.
The only skate video I put up there with the first BB in terms of influence is Plan B - Virtual Reality -- particularly this legendary part It's interesting that all the original BB team is still skating at a high level and entering 'legends' type contests -- Hawk and Caballero both just had serious injuries Tony broke his femur on his half pipe and Steve did something similar (it may have been a femur as well).
This is my friend Dan MacFarlane's video. He was the kid brother of a HS friend back in the 80s. And here's his board line. https://danmacfarlane.com/
I remember going to the Skatepark of Houston in the early 90's and while I was there, they literally gave me a VHS with pirated copies of Shackle Me Not and a couple other videos for free. I think at that time it was technically closed there were kids running it and and they still let people skate. I still had this video up until just a few years ago.
Mullen's always been my favorite skater- I still have my SMA Mullen freestyle board - signed by the man himself. Have you ever seen his Ted Talks? Great Stuff.
I've seen the Bones Brigade doc and the one on Hosoi. Just watched this last night: It was superb! Although, towards the end, it delves into the fact that skaters from that era are now, in some cases, grandfathers. They're not getting any younger and they are BEAT UP. Watching a very haggard Lance Mountain talking about how he has no doubt that he has CTE was sobering. Also, if you can find it, check out "Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator" about Mark "Gator" Rogowski. I had NO idea about what happened to that guy.
