Dismissed OU quarterback Bomar enrolls at Sam Houston State
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Dismissed Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar has enrolled at Division I-AA Sam Houston State, where he doesn't have to sit out a year but still must wait for eligibility clearance from the NCAA.

Bomar and a teammate were kicked off the team at Oklahoma earlier this month for violating NCAA work rules by accepting payment for more work than they performed at a car dealership.

Bomar could play for the Bearkats this season after a review by the NCAA reinstatement committee. Players transferring between Division I-A schools must sit out one year.

"This is a unique situation, and we look forward to assisting Rhett in continuing his education and athletic career," Sam Houston State athletic director Bobby Williams said in a statement. "We will begin the restatement process for Rhett with the NCAA as soon as possible. There is no exact timetable for how long this process will take, but we will do everything possible to expedite the procedure."

Bomar, a high school star in the Dallas suburb of Grand Prairie, set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards last season. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

"I am excited about it," Bomar told Houston television station KRIV. "Just the opportunity to come down here and be able to play this year at some point."

How fitting that he's transferring to the college located where the state penitentiary is. :D

Very interesting. I hope he doesn't turn out like the last OU QB that transferred to SHSU....who got kicked off the team for using steroids.

Bomar should fare well at SHSU. We have a Texas Tech like offense, so he should be able to pile up some serious stats. If that happens, he could very well get drafted like Josh McCown, who transferred from SMU.

I wonder if he'll hear anything from the UT fans when we play them in Austin this year. At any rate, this bodes well for SHSU winning the Southland Conference. :)

Yeah, the last Oklahoma QB that went to SHSU was a disaster, Noah Allen.

They actually let him back on the team last spring, but he was kicked off again earlier this month for academic reasons. Damn shame...

My thoughts exactly...Bomar, even thought I think he is overrated, instantly makes SHSU the best team in the conference, he definitely would have made TX State the best as well.

With that said, what do you think of Baliff? My gf goes to Texas State and I was watching the Conference finals (or semi-finals) last season and was absolutely in disgust when he decided to kneel the final 1:30 and play for OT. Neely may have lost the game with the INT...but I blame Baliff more than anyone else, he never gave his team a chance to win.

I was wondering what happened to him. I'm suprised at my alma mater. I guess this makes us move up a bit in the rankings. I can't even imagine what a sellout looks like at Bowers Stadium. I had heard they sold out when Alcorn State and Steve McNair came to town...well before my time there. The only games I've been to there was to watch my brother kick for SWT.

I might have to go to a game this season. I'd be at the game here against UT if it wasn't on my son's 1st birthday. Certainly makes that game more interesting...not so much for the final score as it is for the story. "Bomar still gets shot at UT"

My brother played for Baliff at SWT. He was shocked at that move. And to defend it as if you'd do it again. It was one of the most boneheaded moves in football last year. You have the tie. You have the ball on your 40 with more that 1 minute. You have to go for it.

QUESTION: Does the infraction hurt his NFL prospects?
or does the NFL even care?

If he can produce on the field, that is all that matters.

I figured he'd either go to UH or a Juco. not an AA school.

Now if he wants to transfer into 1-A he has to sit.

Oh well, good luck to him.

Bailiff has said numerous times that he will not take people of questionable character. Im kinda of on the fence about Bomar, but I have alot a faith in Bailiff. I cannot defend his decision to take a knee, being at that game it seemed to take all the energy out of the building. But Bailiff has my support, hes done what no coach at SWT/Texas State has done while at the I-AA level and thats win. Personally I hope he stays at Texas State a long time, but we will see. Ok back to my lurking ways :)

everyone was disgusted with that awful decision.... especially those of us at the stadium sitting through below freezing temperatures. we honestly didn't know what to make of it at first, people were literally saying out loud "no way we're not going for it" with a completely perplexed look on their faces. and that quickly turned to anger once it was for certain.

it is honestly one of the wrost calls i've ever seen in all my years of sports watching.

other than that, though, the guy's a quality coach and he's a stand up guy.

Ya, I could only imagine what it was like for the fans in the stands. It was funny trying to explain what was going on to my gf, she couldn't understand why I was in complete shock and disgust. And when Neely threw the INT, my mouth just dropped, and then I had to explain that the game was lost.

Bomar might not play this year. From what I've heard SHSU has some talented QB's including a transfer from TT. But if he does play, who knows when. He's had one practice and the first game is this Saturday. How long will it take him to catch up to the other QB's who have already learned the system?

I graduated from Texas State last May and was at that last game. I for one am glad that Bailiff decided not to accept Bomar.

SHSU does have a glut of QB's, but at his potential Bomar is above the rest. Phillip Daugherty transferred in from Tech last year, but didn't impress last year. A lot of people thought he'd come in a light it up since he was coming from another high-paced offense. I think he's a senior this year.

Then they've got another senior in Wade Pate, who actually started as a freshman the year before Dustin Long came...that team won 2 games. Pate is a battler, but doesn't have the talent like Bomar or Daugherty.

In the end Pate and Daugherty are good enough to start on a lot of 1AA teams, but Bomar would be a good 1A QB and a perhaps great 1AA QB.

    Excerpts from the ESPN article:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2564015

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Dismissed Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar has enrolled at Division I-AA Sam Houston State, but coach Todd Whitten told ESPN's Joe Schad after practice on Monday night that he did not expect Bomar would be eligible to play before midseason at the earliest.

Whitten said he would also hold Bomar out of practice until he was given paperwork by the NCAA indicating the quarterback was cleared to work with the team.

Under NCAA rules, Bomar does not have to sit out a year because he is not transferring between Division I-A schools, but he still must wait for eligibility clearance from the NCAA to play for the Bearkats.

    ---------------------------------
The radio guys were thoerizing that since he may have to miss half the season anyway, the Kats might just redshirt him.

Smaller scale, but better for him to not sit out a year...It would be interesting to see when he actually plays this year...
