    close...

but Sura started the season on the DL. He came back in January after the Rockets had amassed a dismall 6-11 record and the result was a complete turnaround for the season.

he played up until the all-star break, then sat out a few more right afterwards, playing injured for the rest of the season after the rockets sputtered out of the gate once more without him there.

even only playing at 75% he set the tone for the team and was unanimously regarded as the "personality" of team.

unfortunately his final games played for Houston consisted of him being smoked by Jason Terry in the playoffs due to essentially playing on one leg...

the guy is an enigma because his short tenure here highlighted the beginning of the last memorable season rockets fans have had to cherish since hakeem...and ended as quickly as it began. text book cult hero.

    sorry for the rant folks...

Actually he did dunk quite a few times, the most memorable one was against the Nets when T-Mac went for a layup, someone rebounded in the air and went for a layup again and then sura out no where dunked it.

And all the comments that were said before, I also have one thing to point out about that year, he was OUR 3rd scorer, he was really explosive, he had 35 against the Nets, 24 on like 6/7 shooting, all of them 3s and 6/7 free throws. If we had him instead of Rafer, we'd be a 55 win team right now.

It was December, not January. He only missed one month.

I posted this in another thread before I saw this one, this post belongs here. The Rockets seemed like they didn't know how to win when he wasn't playing.

Along with him throwing up close to a triple double every game, along with him playing through bad knees, bad back, two dislocated fingers and a bruised eye. What I miss most was his swagger and tuffness, who could forget when Howard from the Mavs undercut Yao in the playoffs and Sura came back with revenge by throwing Howard down and laying the 'law' down, saying basically "No dude, thats not how its going to be"

I miss Sura sooo much. B Grade point guard??? Maybe for his career but his numbers for us were surreal and he played total kickass in JVG's system.

He was so tuff, our team is missing that so much~ just that tuffness he had and his swagger. He was inspiring.

Tribute to Sura (go to the 2:22 mark)

Thats probably why he is known for getting all those hot women, playing with 100% confidence on the court and obvisoley off the court too with those re-known hot girls.

It's funny how many people question this team's ability to find the right pieces to decorate their foundation with. That when seemingly pedestrian moves that landed us Bob improved this team by leaps and bounds. Wesley, Barry, James and Sura were a tremendous lift that year. It was just unfortunate that Bob broke down toward the end and Juwan's season was cut short. You see how far we took a distantly talented team like Dallas to seven games and remember what this organization is capable of.

That team was so unique in it's pride and character that I feel fortunate to have enjoyed every second of their run.

I was a fan of Sura's long before he even became a Rocket, so I was pretty happy when they finally got him. I think it says a lot about him that he had such an impact on team even though he was half-crippled on the court.

Bob had something that no one on the team had. It's not really heart. Yao, Shane, Chuck, even Juwan and Rafer definitely have heart. TMac shows heart sometimes.

I call what Bob had attitude. He had the kind of competitive fire where he hated the opponent. He wanted to give the hard fouls. He didn't mind body slamming another player. If he was screened too well, the screener was going down. It led to more fouls, but it set a tone. There's no one on the team that have that kind of attitude. The Rockets could definitely use it.

true that. seems like most players, current squad included, let the other team or the refs dictate the way they play. sura would just play through all that and force everyone else to adjust to him. imagine yao with sura's fire; if he got called for a ticky tack foul, he'd give a harder one to show the ref the difference. i think yao and tmac have shown some fire occasionally, but if they could maintain it and play every game with passion and intensity, it wouldn't matter who else was on the court.

He was physically 'crippled', but his refusal to surrender and courage to fight it -- and basically risk his career -- was inspiring to say the least. He was the team's leader, he defined the team's character and along with James gave this team those 'pitbulls' Yao and McGrady need around them to succeed. He made sure that this team wouldn't be pushed around, and his leadership had the whole city believing that this team was destined for something greater than themselves.

As a fan, I couldn't ask for anything more than guys who would give it their all, and when you have a guy like Bobby out there playing in the condition he's in, his teammates couldn't help but be inspired.

Again, with the current squad, I just don't see it. I think we have more overall talent/depth, but we lack the intangibles and that special something that forces you -- as a fan -- to 'believe'.

    We will see...

Am I the only one that remembers Sura not wanting to pass the ball to Yao? Whenever Yao would repost Sura would instead pass the ball to the other side or take the shot himself?

I remember alot of YOFS complained about that but I never saw that myself, I always thought he passed the ball enough to Yao.. Pass or no pass does it really matter?? Because the important thing was we were actually winning consistantly and constantly when he played. So in my mind whatever he was doing was right....

And even if he did seldom pass the ball to Yao.. atleast when he did do it he did it cleanly and consistantly.. more then I can say for anyone on the Rockets now who cannot seem to be able to make a pass without turning it over... its pretty ridicoulas, most of the players FG % is higher then their pass completion % to Yao.. and thats sad since Rafer shoots like 30%
