The Rockets got fined $100K for treating the entire team to a night in Vegas during a successful West Coast road trip 2 seasons ago. Why would you think the CBA and Stern would allow you to increase an already negotiated contract?

and why would you decide to pay more for a good deal? that's like going back to a store to give them more money because of how damn good the beer tasted.

hey i'm a huge vspan fan for the future shawn, but if you read the articles in the chronicle you will know that van gundy says he will need a lot of time to adjust. I am all about the youth movement. I'm talking about this season and this run for the playoffs/championship. Sura is not a long term answer anywhere, but another season of his intensity and leadership will do wonders to help DEVELOP AND TEACH the rockets youth.

also i forgot to mention, I am not giving up on jl3 and vspan. I love jl3 and always cheered for him to get put in when games got ugly last season. I've also been looking forward to the day we brought vpsan over for years, and I was glad they finally did it. I'm just saying it can't hurt to have a leader for the guards like mutombo is for the big guys.

Well thats good to hear. It just sounded like you were jumping the gun like most rookies do about our players. I mean its one preseason game you cant go to much on it...

& for the record im all for bringing Bobby back as long as it helps the team rather than hurts it. Which means he has to be 90-100% healthy, IMO of course.

I don't think he would be as effective and helpful to the team even if he could make it back....

Sorry, Bob, time to say goodbye

He would always be useful if he's healthy. Good rebounding guard, strong defense, hustle, and attitude.

I think the fact that no one has any idea if Sura is coming back or not probably means that even Sura doesn't know.

So does anyone have an update? I'm betting he is done and will retire. Is he practicing with the team in full contact and intensity? If so there could be some hope and just bring him off the bench to lesson the load on his knee. He would be that bit that would put us over the top.

This is sad news..what went wrong anyways..i thought after the surgery everythin was goin according to plan for him to come back..he gave a lot of contributions in 04..of course he got injured in the playoffs which probably makes every1 here not care much about him coming back.

The right way to look at this has been spelled out in this thread. Sura said he was "cooperating" with the Rockets during his rehab, which means he will allow them to use his salary however best fits their needs, since he will get paid either way. The medical exeption for a player on the roster in December is what I am referring to. This is quite likely the plan for Sura, and why he hasn't practiced, but is "continuing to rehab on his own,'' or whatever the language was.

Clearly, he is going to try and contribute to the Rockets one more time, but just not on the Basketball court. We should appreciate this flexiibility his actions are going to give us, just as we appreciated his hustle and intensity on the court.

I think they let him retire and then they are able to use the TE to acquire a player for essentially the same salary as his retiring salary. The disabled player exception is only worth half his salary which is $1.9 million and if we use that, we are more likely than not, not going to use his salary. That is unless we can move Juwan for expiring contracts.

If Sura retires, it would be our loss.

    Jopat,

Thanks for the clarification. That is essentially what I was trying to say, although I don't know all the rules like you do. I meant, that he would either retire, be medically exempted or traded as an expiring contract then retiring, whatever helped the rockets the most. It appears he is letting the Rockets dictate the timing of his exit from the sport.

Sura has no knees left. He is not coming back ever. He will dedicate his time to chasing the ladies full time instead of loose balls.

Uhhh, I'm not exactly an expert on the CBA. Just have a very general understanding. Gater is probably the best on this board at that. I am just surmising based on where we are with our payroll. Just can't see us using both the Sura exception and the TE. And the TE expires in January I think.

I'm still thinking we wait until December and see how this team is stacking up and if it looks good and we aren't using Howard that much or it looks like we don't need him because Novak is providing us shooting on the 2nd unit and Hayes is breaking out, then we may try to move him by himself or him and an assett likewhatever for Chris Mihm (big man, expiring contract) and whatever else to make a deal work.

It will be interesting to see how everything goes down. I keep going back to the Laker deal in some form because it makes sense all the way around, especially if Hayes and Novak give us quality minutes. Mihm gives us one more big 5 to throw out there in the playoffs against Duncan and Shaq. Not only that but we could get a new TE out of that deal. For instance if LA packaged Mihm and McKie for Howard, then we could pull a new TE out of that deal that would represent the difference between Howard and McKie's contracts, which would essentially be about the same money as Bob Sura's contract that we get rid of because of medical retirement. One of the signs of whether a deal like this is possible will be whether or not LA hangs on to McKie or cuts him. If they cut him, they are essentially throwing away $2.5 mill for nothing and it looks like there would be no deal in the works.

Of course, another real simple deal would be if Sura retired, and LA wanted rid of Mihm, we could pick him up for the TE and his salary essentially replaces Sura's. Simple deal that would save LA $8 million considering they are paying the tax this year.
